This was the time when the cornerstone – Christ – was laid in the foundation of the Holy Orthodox Church. And His first disciples became the first teachers and apostles of this Church.

The heart of the disciple, filled with love, merges with the heart of the Divine Teacher, and there is no mystery hidden from the disciple. The entire life of the Divine Teacher, all His deeds, all the incomprehensible depth of the new teaching are opened to the loving heart. And the young John in three years came to the measure of Christ's stature, matured to complete self-denial in order to live only in God, matured for service to God and people, matured for the apostolic path of the cross, becoming everything to all.

Four years of the academy passed and the future Patriarch Tikhon, then still a young man Basil. And his maturation passed at the feet of the Savior, in the bosom of the Holy Orthodox Church, and he foresaw the Lord, "... for he is at my right hand..." (Psalm 15:8). And the new respectful nickname Patriarch, which he received from academic friends and turned out to be visionary, tells us about the way of his life at that time.

And Basil received the love of Christ with his pure and free soul. And, warmed by its rays, he, like the Apostle John, matured to the point of completely surrendering himself to the will of God, to the point of readiness to go where the Lord called him, and to drink to the bottom of the cup which God had prepared for him. And he took his first step after the Lord to the cross, bowing his neck at the age of twenty-six under three lofty monastic vows: virginity, poverty and obedience. And Monk Tikhon was born, for whom a new life began, from the first to the last day, devoted to the service of God, to the service of the Russian Orthodox Church.

И через шесть лет он стал уже епископом, и епископство было для него "не сила, почесть и власть, а дело, труд и подвиг".

В тридцать один год он стал отцем отцов, любящее Бога сердце его исполнилось любовью и чуткостью к людям, безошибочно увлекая в любовь Божию сердца пасомых. Таково свойство любви. Ведь и по слову апостола-евангелиста Иоанна Богослова: "...Бог есть любовь" (1Ин.4,8).

Приведу один, на первый взгляд, незначительный пример из жизни святителя Тихона, только год как вступившего тогда на высокое архиерейское служение. Всего год пробыл святитель Тихон на своей первой кафедре, но когда пришел указ о его переводе, город наполнился плачем — плакали православные, плакали униаты и католики, которых тоже было много на Холмщине. Город собрался на вокзал провожать так мало у них послужившего, но так много ими возлюбленного архипастыря. Народ силой пытался удержать отъезжающего владыку, сняв поездную обслугу, а многие и просто легли на полотно железной дороги, не давая возможности увезти от них драгоценную жемчужину — православного архиерея. И только сердечное обращение самого владыки успокоило народ.
