What are the grounds for this belief? Is it not a simple desire to live forever and a fear of annihilation? My mind refuses to imagine any existence without a material basis. I cannot regard man as a visible case in which an invisible soul is placed. The case broke. It can be burned, and the soul can be taken out and put in another place. And what does this other place mean? Will it take up some space? Or this mysterious, immortal soul is not only invisible, but also "spaceless". What is it? To me, she's utter nonsense. And what grounds can make my mind "believe" in this nonsense? I will stop here for now.

Confessor. Before answering your question: "What are the grounds for this belief?", let us try to consider whether this is such "absolute nonsense" for your mind as it seems at first glance. Take a purely physical area. The thrown stone falls to the ground. Everyone sees it. And everyone knows that the reason for the fall of the stone is the attraction of the Earth. But no one sees this force, called attraction.

Unknown. What does power have to do with the soul? In order for the force to act, a material environment is needed. And you believe that the soul can exist without a body, that is, without any material environment.

Confessor. Exactly. I tell you that I am taking a purely physical area. Naturally, here phenomena can only exist in the material environment. I want to point out to you that in the physical realm various properties of being are possible -- for example, forces do not have all the properties of matter. They are not visible. Only the actions of forces are visible.

Unknown. Yes of course. The properties of forces and matter are different, but this comparison is unconvincing for the question of the possibility of the existence of the soul outside the body. Scientific experiments establish beyond doubt that so-called psychic life is the result of physicochemical processes, and therefore it cannot be completely separated from matter. And it follows that with the destruction of these physicochemical processes in a living organism, all life must be destroyed. This means that there can be no "soul" left.

Неизвестный. О тех опытах, которые устанавливают, что мысль есть результат определённых физико-химических процессов мозга. Искусственное раздражение некоторых желёз вызывает определённые психологические явления. Повреждение определённых клеток в результате даёт как механическое следствие изменение определённых психических состояний и т. д. Ты, конечно, знаком с этим. Неужели же эти факты не доказывают неопровержимо, что все явления "душевной" жизни есть простые следствия тех изменений и процессов, которые происходят в нашем теле?

Духовник. Доказывают, но не совсем то. Они доказывают, что душа, соединяясь с веществом, находится с ним в некотором взаимодействии и для своего выражения в вещественном мире требует определённых материальных условий. Это лучше всего опять-таки пояснить примером из физической области. Возьми электрическую энергию и электрическую лампочку. Когда лампочка в порядке, электрическая энергия даёт свет, лампочка горит. Но вот лопнул волосок. Ток оборвался. Лампочка погасла. Значит ли это, что электричества не существует и что лампочка и электрическая энергия одно и то же? Электричество существует вне лампочки. Но для того, чтобы проявить себя, оно требует целого ряда материальных условий. Точно так же и та "энергия", которую мы именуем душой. Если ты повредишь материальный аппарат, который служит для выражения душевной жизни, -- например, ту или иную часть мозга, -- душевная жизнь не сможет выражать себя или будет выражать себя неправильно. Но из этого совсем не следует, что мозг твой и есть твоя душа или что душевная жизнь твоя -- результат физико-химических процессов в мозговых клетках. Как не следует, что погасшая электрическая лампочка и электрическая энергия одно и то же.

Неизвестный. Но ведь существование электрической энергии доказывается не только горящей электрической лампочкой, а множеством других опытов. Чем же доказывается бытие души?

Духовник. Подожди. Об этом позже. Пока мы говорим только о том, можно ли считать "абсолютной бессмыслицей" для разума какое бы то ни было бытие без материальной основы.
