Gospel story

The Lord Jesus said to her, "You have said the truth that you have no husband." Thou hast had five husbands, and the one whom thou hast now is not thy husband; You said it fairly.

The woman said to Him, "Lord! I see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain; and you say that the place where we should worship is in Jerusalem.

The Lord Jesus said to her, "Believe me, the time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem." You do not know what you are bowing to; but we know what we worship, for salvation is from the Jews. But the time will come, and has already come, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

The woman said to Him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, that is, Christ; when He comes, He will tell us all things.

The Lord Jesus said to her, "It is I who speak to you."

At that time His disciples came and were amazed that He was talking to a woman; yet not one said, What do you require? or, "What are you talking to her about?"

Then the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and said to the people, "Go and see the man who told me all that I have done: is not he the Christ? They went out of the city and went to Him.

And the disciples besought Him, saying, Rabbi! Eat it. But He said to them, "I have food that you do not know." Wherefore the disciples said among themselves, Who hath brought him food? The Lord Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work." Do you not say that there are still four months, and the harvest will come? But I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and behold the fields, how they are white, and ripe for the harvest. He who reaps receives a reward and gathers fruit into eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps will rejoice together, for in this case the saying is true: the one sows, and the other reaps. I have sent you to reap what you have not labored for: others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman, who testified that He had told her all that she had done. And therefore, when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them; and he tarried there two days. And many more believed at His word. And they said to the woman, "We no longer believe according to your words, for we ourselves have heard and learned that He is truly the Savior of the world, Christ." And after two days he went out of there and went into Galilee.
