20. And in the book of Psalms it is written, "Let his court be desolate, and let there be no one who dwells in it; and let another take his dignity.

21. Therefore, it is necessary that one of those who were with us all the time that the Lord Jesus was dwelling and dealing with us,

22. from the baptism of John until the day on which he ascended from us, he was with us a witness of his resurrection.

23. And they appointed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was called Justus, and Matthias;

24. and they prayed and said, "You, Lord, the Knower of the hearts of all, show me one of these two whom you have chosen

25. to accept the lot of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas fell away, in order to go to his own place.

26. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he is numbered among the eleven apostles.

Chapter 2

1. At the coming of the day of Pentecost, they were all with one accord together.

2. And suddenly there was a noise from heaven, as if from a rushing strong wind, and it filled all the house where they were.

3. And there appeared to them cloven tongues, as of fire, and they rested on each of them.

4. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5. And in Jerusalem there were Jews, pious men, of every nation under heaven.

6. When this uproar was made, the people gathered together, and were in confusion, for everyone heard them speaking in his own language.

7. And they were all amazed and amazed, saying among themselves, "Are not all these who speak Galileans?

8. How do we each hear our own dialect in which we were born?

9. The Parthians, and the Medes, and the Elamites, and the inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,

10. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya adjacent to Cyrene, and those who came from Rome, Jews and proselytes,

11. Cretans and Arabians, do we hear them speaking with our tongues about the great works of God?

12. And they were all amazed, and perplexed, they said to one another, "What does this mean?"

13. And others, mocking, said, "They are drunk with sweet wine."
