31 And when the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Reuben, because she said, 'The Lord has looked upon my affliction, for now my husband shall love me.'

33 And she conceived again, and bore [Jacob's second] son, and said, 'The Lord heard that I was unloved, and gave me this also.' And she called his name Simeon.

34 And she conceived again, and bore a son, and said, 'Now my husband shall cleave to me, for I have borne him three sons.' Wherefore his name was called Levi.

35 And she conceived again, and bore a son, and said, 'Now I will praise the Lord.' Therefore she called his name Judas. And she stopped giving birth.

Chapter 30

1 And when Rachel saw that she bore no children to Jacob, Rachel was jealous of her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, and if it is not so, I die.

2 And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to [her], 'Am I God, who hath not given thee the fruit of the womb?'

3 And she said, Behold my maidservant Bilhah; come in to her; let her bear on my lap, that I also may have children by her.

4 And she gave Bilhah her maidservant to be his wife; And Jacob went in to her.

5 And Bilhah [Rachel's maidservant] conceived and bore Jacob a son.

6 And Rachel said, 'God has judged me, and he has heard my voice, and has given me a son.' Therefore she called his name Dan.

7 And Bilhah, the handmaiden of Rachel, another son of Jacob, conceived and bore again.

8 And Rachel said, 'With great struggle I have fought with my sister, and I have prevailed.' And she called his name Naphtali.
