And they sent word to Tamar, saying, Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timna to shear his cattle.

And she took off the garment of her widowhood, and covered herself with a veil, and shut herself up, and sat down at the gate of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she was not given to him as a wife.

And Judas saw her, and considered her to be a harlot, because she had covered her face. [And did not recognize her.]

And he turned to her, and said, 'I will come in to you.' For he did not know that this was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me if you come to me?"

He said, 'I will send you a kid from [my] flock.' She said, "Will you give me a pledge while you send it?"

And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy seal, and thy girdle, and thy reed, which is in thy hand. And he gave it to her, and went in to her; and she conceived of him.

And she arose, and went, and took off her veil, and put on the garment of her widowhood.

And Judah sent a kid through his friend the Adullamite, to take the pledge out of the woman's hand, but he did not find her.

And he asked the inhabitants of the place, saying, 'Where is the harlot who was in Enaim by the wayside?' But they said, "There was no harlot here."

And he returned to Judas, and said, 'I have not found her; And the inhabitants of the place said, There was no harlot here.

And Judas said, Let her take for herself, that they may not laugh at us; Behold, I sent this kid, but you did not find her.

And it came to pass, about three months, that they said unto Judah, saying, "Tamar thy daughter-in-law has fallen into fornication, and behold, she is with child of fornication." Judas said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned."

But when they led her away, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'I am pregnant by the one whose these things are.' And she said, "Find out whose seal and sling and reed this is."

And Judas knew it, and said, It is more righteous than I, because I have not given it to Shelah my son. And he did not know it anymore.
