53 And the seven years of abundance that were in the land of Egypt passed away,

54 And there came seven years of famine, as Joseph said. And there was a famine in all the lands, and in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55 But when all the land of Egypt began to suffer a famine, the people began to cry out to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, Go to Joseph and do what he tells you.

56 And there was a famine in all the land; And Joseph opened all the barns, and sold corn to the Egyptians. And the famine increased in the land of Egypt.

57 And they came into Egypt from all countries to buy corn from Joseph, for the famine had increased throughout all the land.

Chapter 42

1 And Jacob knew that there was bread in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, What are you looking?

2 And he said, 'Behold, I have heard that there is bread in Egypt; Go thither and buy us bread from there, that we may live and not die.

3 And the ten brothers of Joseph went out to buy corn in Egypt,

4 but Jacob did not send Benjamin the brother of Joseph with his brethren, for he said, "That no calamity should befall him."

5 And the children of Israel came to buy corn with the rest of them, for there was a famine in the land of Canaan.

6 And Joseph was a ruler in that land; and he sold bread to all the people of the earth. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to the ground.

7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and knew them; but he showed that he did not know them, and spoke to them sternly, and said to them, Where have you come from? They said, "Out of the land of Canaan, to buy food."

8 Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
