And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.

And those who came about the eleventh hour received a denarius each.

And those who came first thought that they would receive more, but they also received a denarius;

And when they had received, they began to murmur against the master of the house

And they said, 'These last have labored one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have endured the hardship of the day and the heat.'

And he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend! I do not offend you; Did you not make a deal with me for a denarius?

Take what is yours and go; but I want to give the latter the same thing as you;

Do I not have authority in my own to do what I will? Or is thy eye envious because I am kind?

So shall the last be first, and the first last, for many are called, but few are chosen.

And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took away the twelve disciples alone, and said to them,

Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death.

And they shall deliver him up to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified; and on the third day he will rise again.

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, bowing down and asking something of him.

He said to her, 'What do you want?' She said to Him, "Tell these two of my sons to sit with You, one on Your right hand, and the other on Your left, in Your kingdom."

Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you are asking." Can you drink the cup that I will drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized? They say to Him, "We can."

And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink my cup, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, ye shall be baptized: but it does not depend on me to let them sit on my right hand and on my left, but to whom my Father has prepared.

And when the other ten disciples heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers.

And Jesus called them, and said, 'You know that the princes of the nations rule over them, and the nobles rule over them;

But let it not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your servant.

And whosoever will be first among you, let him be your servant;

for the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
