And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great host of heaven, praising God, and crying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

And when the angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see what has happened there, what the Lord has told us.'

And they came in haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the child lying in a manger.

And when they saw it, they told them what had been announced to them concerning this child.

And all who heard were amazed at what the shepherds were telling them.

And Mary kept all these words, laying them in her heart.

And the shepherds returned, praising and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, as they had been told.

And after eight days, when the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, which was called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him before the Lord,

As it is ordained in the law of the Lord, that every male babe that opens the couch shall be consecrated unto the Lord,

And to offer for sacrifice, according to the law of the Lord, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Then there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon. He was a righteous and godly man, seeking the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

It was foretold to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he saw the Christ of the Lord.

And he came by inspiration to the temple. And when the parents brought the child Jesus to perform a lawful rite on him,

and he took him in his arms, blessed God, and said,

Now Thou dost let Thy servant go, O Lord, according to Thy word, in peace,

For my eyes have seen Thy salvation,

which thou hast prepared before the face of all nations,

a light for the enlightenment of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

And Joseph and his mother were amazed at what was said of him.
