How to Read the Bible

And there dwelt there before the Emim, a great people, and numerous and lofty, like the sons of Anak,

And they were reckoned among the Rephaim, as the sons of Anak; And the Moabites call them Emim;

And in Seir dwelt formerly the Horites; but the children of Esau drove them out, and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead, as Israel did with the land of their inheritance which the Lord had given them.

Arise, therefore, and pass through the valley of Zared. And we passed through the valley of Zared.

Thirty-eight years have passed since we went to Kadesh-barnea, and passed through the valley of Zared, and all the generation of those who go to war has passed away from among us from among the camp, as the Lord swore to them;

and the hand of the LORD was upon them, to destroy them from among the camp, until they perished.

And when all those who went to war were gone away, and were extinct from among the people,

Then the Lord said to me, saying,

Thou hast now passed by the borders of Moab, past Ara,

And he drew near to the Ammonites; Thou shalt not enter into enmity with them, nor make war with them: for I will give thee nothing of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession, for I have given it for the possession of the sons of Lot.

and it was reckoned the land of Rephaim; formerly the Rephaim lived on it; The Ammonites call them Zamzumim;

A great nation, numerous and exalted, like the sons of Anak, and the Lord destroyed them before them, and they drove them out, and dwelt in their place,

as he did for the children of Esau who dwelt in Seir, destroying the Horites before them, and they drove them out, and dwelt in their place, and live to this day.

And the Abbites who dwelt in the villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed and dwelt in their place.
