THE GOSPEL STORY OF GOD THE SON, WHO BECAME INCARNATE FOR OUR SALVATION, SET FORTH IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER IN THE WORDS OF THE HOLY EVANGELISTS

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they laughed at Him. He said to them, "You show yourselves righteous in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts: for what is high among men is an abomination in the sight of God."

The Law and the Prophets before John; from this time on, the Kingdom of God is preached and everyone enters it by effort. But heaven and earth will pass away sooner than one tittle of the law will be lost.

Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whosoever marries a woman who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

136. The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus

Lux. 16, 19–31

A certain man was rich: he dressed himself in purple and fine linen,[21] and every day he feasted magnificently. There was also a certain beggar named Lazarus, who lay at his gate in scabs and wanted to eat the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and the dogs, passing by, licked his scabs.

The beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and he was buried. And in hell, being in torments, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom, and cried out, saying, Father Abraham! have compassion on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.

But Abraham said, "Child! remember that you have already received your good in your life, and Lazarus has received evil; but now he is comforted here, and you suffer. And in addition to all this, a great gulf has been established between you and us, so that those who wish to pass from here to you cannot pass over to us.

Then he said, "I beseech thee, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers; let him testify to them, so that they also do not come to this place of torment. Abraham said to him, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them. And he said, "No, father"

Abraham! but if any one from the dead comes to them, they will repent. Then Abraham said to him, "If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, then even if someone rises from the dead, they will not believe."

137. Miscellaneous Instruction to Disciples

Lux. 17, 1–10

The Lord also said to His disciples: It is impossible not to come to temptations, but woe to him through whom they come. It would have been better for him if a millstone had been hung around his neck and thrown into the sea, than that he had offended one of these little ones.

Watch yourselves. But if your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and turns seven times a day, and says, I repent, forgive him.
