From Genoa, Gogol wrote sympathetic reviews of "The Pupil" by V. A. Sollogub and "Poor People" by F. M. Dostoevsky. "In the author of "Poor People" one can see talent, the choice of subjects speaks in favor of his spiritual qualities", but "everything would have turned out to be much more alive and stronger if it had been more concise". Gogol in Schwalbach, by V. A. Zhukovsky. He received the collections "Housewarming" and "Nevsky Almanac" sent by N. M. Yazykov. He entrusted S. P. Shevyrev with the printing of the second edition of the first volume of Dead Souls, and P. A. Pletnev with the publication of Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends. Letters NoNo 37–40.
