Bible. Books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments

32 And they sent a garment of many colors, and brought it to their father, and said, 'We have found this; See whether this garment is thy son's, or not.

33 And he recognized it, and said, 'This is my son's garment; the beast of prey ate him; surely Joseph was torn to pieces.

34 And Jacob tore his garments, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters were gathered together to comfort him; but he would not be comforted, and said, "With sorrow I will go down to my son into hell." Thus his father mourned him.

36 And the Midianites sold it in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh's courtier, the captain of the bodyguard.

Chapter 38

1 At that time Judah departed from his brethren, and dwelt near a certain Adullammite, whose name was Hira.

2 And Judah saw there the daughter of a Canaanite, whose name was Shua; And he took her, and went in to her.

3 She conceived and bore a son; and he called his name Ir.

4 And she conceived again, and bore a son, and called his name Onan.

5 And she bore again a son, and called his name Shelah. Judah was in Hezib when she gave birth to him.

6 And Judah took Irah his firstborn wife; her name is Tamar.

7 Er, the firstborn of Judah, was displeased in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed him.

8 And Judah said to Onan, 'Go in to your brother's wife, marry her as a brother-in-law, and restore the seed to your brother.'

9 And Onan knew that the seed would not be his, so when he went in to his brother's wife, he poured it out on the ground, that he might not give the seed to his brother.

10 Evil was in the sight of the Lord that he did; and he put him to death also.

11 And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law [after the death of his two sons], 'Thou shalt dwell as a widow in thy father's house, until Shelah my son grows up.' For he said [in his mind], "He also would not die like his brethren." And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

12 A long time passed, and the daughter of Shuya, the wife of Judah, died. And Judas was comforted, and went to Timna to the shearers of his cattle, himself and Hira his friend, the Adullamite.

13 And they sent word to Tamar, saying, Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timna to shear his cattle.

14 And she took off the garment of her widowhood, and covered herself with a veil, and shut herself up, and sat down at the gate of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she was not given to him as a wife.

15 And Judas saw her, and considered her to be a harlot, because she had covered her face. [And did not recognize her.]
