16 And they sent word to Joseph, 'Thy father commanded before his death, saying,

17 Thus say unto Joseph, Forgive thy brethren their guilt and their sin, for they have done thee evil. And now forgive the sins of the servants of your father's God. Joseph wept when he was told this.

18 And his brethren themselves came, and fell down before him, and said, Behold, we are thy servants.

19 And Joseph said, 'Do not be afraid, for I fear God;

20 Behold, ye have devised evil against me; but God turned it into good, in order to do what it is now: to preserve the life of a great number of people;

21 Therefore fear not: I will nourish you and your children. And he calmed them, and spoke after their hearts.

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt himself, and his father's house; and Joseph lived only a hundred and ten years.

23 And Joseph saw the children of Ephraim unto the third generation, and also the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh were born on Joseph's knees.

24 And Joseph said to his brethren, 'I am dying, but God will visit you, and bring you out of this land into the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.'

25 And Joseph swore to the children of Israel, saying, 'God will visit you, and bring my bones out of hence.'

26 And Joseph died a hundred and ten years old. And they embalmed him, and put him in an ark in Egypt.

Chapter 1

1 These are the names of the children of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob, every man with his household:

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy [five], and Joseph was already in Egypt.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all their generation;

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied, and increased and increased exceedingly, and the land was filled with them.

8 And there arose in Egypt a new king, who knew not Joseph,
