8 beyond the Jordan, opposite Jericho to the east, they separated: Betzer in the wilderness, in the plain, from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Manasseh;

9 These cities are appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the sojourners who dwell among them, that every one who kills a man by mistake may flee thither, lest he die by the hand of him who avenges blood, until he is brought before the congregation.

Chapter 21

1 And the rulers of the generations of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the rulers of the generations of the children of Israel,

2 And they spake unto them in Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The Lord hath commanded by Moses to give us cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for our cattle.

3 And the children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritances, according to the command of the LORD, these cities with their suburbs.

4 The lot went out for the tribes of Kohath; And the sons of Aaron the priest, the Levites, of the tribe of Judah, and of the tribe of Simeon, and of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities, were given by lot.

5 and the rest of the sons of Kohath of the tribes of the tribes of Ephraim, and of the tribe of Dan, and of the half of the tribe of Manasseh, by lot, were given ten cities;

And the 6 sons of Gershon of the tribes of the tribe of Issachar, and of the tribe of Asher, and of the tribe of Naphtali, and of the half of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, were given thirteen cities by lot.

7 And the sons of Merarin, according to their tribes, from the tribe of Reuben, and from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

8 And the children of Israel gave to the Levites these cities and their suburbs, as the LORD had commanded by Moses, by lot.

9 Of the tribe of the sons of Judah, and of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, [and of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin] they gave cities, which are here called by name:

10 And the sons of Aaron, of the tribes of Kohath, of the sons of Levi,

11 And they gave Kiriath-arba the father of Enakov, or Hebron, on the mountain of Judah, and the suburbs thereof round about.
