The Holy Gospel

16 Then Herod, seeing himself mocked by the Magi, was very angry, and sent to slay all the babes in Bethlehem and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had learned from the Magi.  17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 18 A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and weeping, and a great cry; Rachel weeps for her children and does not want to be comforted, for they are gone.

19 And after the death of Herod, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Egypt in a dream, 20 saying, 'Arise, take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the soul of the child are dead.'  21 And he arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.  22 And when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judea in the place of Herod his father, he feared to go thither; but having received a revelation in a dream, he went into the borders of Galilee 23 and came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, that he should be called a Nazarene.

1 In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and said, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'  3 For he is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."  4 And John himself had a garment of camel's hair, and a girdle of leather about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey.  5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the country round about the Jordan, went out to him, 6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.  7 And when John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them, 'Offspring of vipers! Who inspired you to flee from the wrath to come?  8 Bring forth therefore the worthy fruit of repentance, 9 and think not to say in yourselves, 'Our father is Abraham,' for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.  10 Already the axe is laid at the root of the trees: every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  11 I baptize you in water for repentance, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I; I am not worthy to bear His shoes; He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire;  12 His shovel is in his hand, and he will purge his threshing floor, and gather his wheat into the garner, and the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.  14 And John restrained him, and said, 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?'  15 But Jesus answered and said to him, 'Leave it now, for thus it behooves us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John admits Him.  16 And having been baptized, Jesus immediately came up out of the water, and behold, the heavens were opened unto him, and John saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and descending upon him.  17 And behold, a voice from heaven saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, 2 and having fasted forty days and forty nights, he hungered at last.  3 And the tempter came unto him, and said, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.  4 And he answered and said unto him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.  5 Then the devil took him into the holy city, and set him on the wing of the temple, 6 and said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge over you, and they will bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'  7 Jesus said to him, "It is also written, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'  8 Again the devil takes him up to a very high mountain, and shews him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory, 9 and saith unto him, 'All these things I will give thee, if thou shalt fall down and worship me.'  10 Then Jesus said to him, 'Get thee behind me, Satan, for it is written, 'Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.'  11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

12 And when Jesus heard that John had been put into custody, he withdrew into Galilee, 13 and left Nazareth, and came and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, who said, 15 The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, on the way by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, 16 A people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those who sit in the land and the shadow of death, light shone.  17 From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

18 And as he passed by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their nets into the sea, for they were fishermen, 19 and he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'  20 And straightway they left their nets, and followed him.  21 From thence as he went on, he saw two other brothers, James Zebedee and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.  22 And straightway they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every infirmity among the people.  24 And a rumour of him went out throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all the infirm, afflicted with various diseases and fits, and the possessed by demons, and lunatics, and the paralytic, and He healed them.  25 And a great multitude of people followed him from Galilee, and from the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

1 And when he saw the multitude, he went up into the mountain; and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.  2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
