The Gospel of John

1

E-1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  E-2 It was with God in the beginning.  3 All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.  E-4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not enveloped it.

6 There was a man sent from God; his name was John.  7 He came for a testimony, to bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through him.  E-8 He was not a light, but was sent to bear witness to the Light.

E-9 And there was a true Light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into the world.  10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not know him.  11 He came to his own, and his own received him not.  12 And to those who received him, to them that believe in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were not born of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; and we have seen His glory, the glory as the Only Begotten of the Father.  15 John testifies of Him, and crying out, he says, "This was the One of whom I said, that He who came after me stood before me, because he was before me."  16 And of his fullness we have all received, and grace for grace, 17 for the law was given through Moses. but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  18 No one has ever seen God; The Only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has revealed.

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?'  20 He declared, and did not deny it, and declared that I was not the Christ.  21 And they asked him, 'What is it?' Are you Elijah? He said, "No." Prophet? He answered: no.  22 And they said unto him, Who art thou? That we may give an answer to those who sent us: What wilt thou say of thyself?  23 He said, 'I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Straighten the way of the Lord, as Isaiah the prophet said.'  24 And the messengers were of the Pharisees;  25 And they asked him, 'Why then do you baptize, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?'  26 John answered and said to them, "I baptize in water; but there is one standing among you whom you do not know.  27 He is He who comes after me, but He who stands before me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of His shoes.  E-28 It was at Bethabara by the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 And the next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, 'Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.'  30 This is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me, who has gone before me, because he was before me.'  31 I did not know Him; but for this reason He came to baptize in water, that He might be manifested to Israel.  32 And John testified, saying, 'I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and abiding upon him.'  33 I did not know him; but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, On whom you see the Spirit descending and abiding upon Him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.  34 And I saw and testified that this is the Son of God.

35 And on the morrow John stood again, and two of his disciples.  36 And when he saw Jesus coming, he said, 'Behold the Lamb of God.'  37 When the two disciples heard these words from him, they followed Jesus.  38 And Jesus, having turned and seen them coming, said to them, 'What have you need?' And they said unto him, Rabbi, which is to say, teacher, where dwellest thou?  39 He said to them, 'Go and see.' They went and saw where He lived; and they stayed with him that day. It was about ten o'clock.  40 One of the two who heard from John about Jesus and followed him was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.  41 He was the first to find his brother Simon, and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah, which means, Christ;  42 and brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looked at him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah; thou shalt be called Cephas, which means a stone (Peter).

43 And the next day Jesus desired to go into Galilee, and found Philip, and said to him, Follow me.  44 And Philip was from Bethsaida, from the same city as Andrew and Peter.  45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the law and the prophets, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth."  46 But Nathanael said to him, 'Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?' Philip said to him, "Go and see."  47 And when Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said of him, "Behold a true Israelite, in whom there is no guile."  48 Nathanael said to him, 'Why do you know me?' Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."  49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi! You are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.  50 Jesus answered and said to him, 'You believe, because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree; you will see more than this.  51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, From henceforth ye shall see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending unto the Son of man.

E-1 On the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.  2 Jesus and his disciples were also called to the wedding.  3 And because there was a lack of wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'  4 Jesus said to her, 'What have I to do with you, Woman?' My hour has not yet come.  5 His mother said to the servants, 'Whatsoever he says to you, do it.'  6 And there were six stone waterpots, standing according to the custom of the purification of the Jews, containing two or three measures.  7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the vessels with water." And they filled them to the top.  8 And he saith unto them, Now draw it, and bring it to the master of the feast. And they carried it.  9 And when the steward had tasted the water which had become wine, and he did not know whence it came, only the servants who drew the water knew, then the steward called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, "Every man gives the good wine first, and when they are drunk, then the worst; and thou hast preserved the good wine until now.  11 Thus Jesus began the miracles at Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and His disciples believed in Him.  12 And after these things he came to Capernaum, himself, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and there they stayed a few days.  13 The Passover of the Jews was approaching, and Jesus came to Jerusalem 14 and found that oxen and sheep and doves were being sold in the temple, and money changers were sitting.  15 And having made a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, even the sheep and the oxen; and scattered the money of the moneychangers, and overturned their tables.  16 And he said to those who sold doves, 'Take this from hence, and do not make my Father's house a house of trade.'  17 And his disciples remembered that it is written, 'Zeal for thy house devours me.'  18 And the Jews said, "By what sign wilt thou prove unto us that thou hast authority to do such things?"  19 Jesus answered and said to them, 'Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.'  20 And the Jews said to this, 'This temple has been built for forty-six years, and you will build it in three days?'  21 And He spoke of the temple of His body.  22 And when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had spoken these things, and believed the Scriptures, and the word which Jesus had spoken.  23 And when he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, many saw the miracles which he did, and believed in his name.  24 But Jesus Himself did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all 25 and had no need for anyone to bear witness of man, for He Himself knew what was in man.

1 And there was one among the Pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, one of the rulers of the Jews.  2 He came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi! we know that you are a teacher who came from God; for no one can do such miracles as you do, unless God is with him.  3 Jesus answered and said unto him, 'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.'  4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old?" Can he enter his mother's womb another time and be born?  5 Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say to you, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."  6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7 Do not be surprised that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'  8 The Spirit breatheth where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but thou knowest not whence it cometh or whither it goeth: so it is with every one that is born of the Spirit.  9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can this be?"  10 Jesus answered and said to him, 'You are a teacher of Israel, and do you not know this?'  11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak of what we know, and bear witness of what we have seen, but ye receive not our testimony.  12 If I have told you about earthly things, and you do not believe, how will you believe if I speak to you about heavenly things?  13 No man ascended into heaven except the Son of man who came down from heaven, which is in heaven.  14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, 15 that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.  16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  17 For God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.  18 He who believes in him is not judged, but he who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  19 But the judgment is that light has come into the world; but men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds were evil;  20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed, because they are evil, 21 but he who does righteousness comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, because they are done in God.
