Preface

The cause of spiritual enlightenment is a priority for the Russian Orthodox Church today, as Bishop Longin of Saratov and Volsk emphasizes in all his speeches. And in the Saratov diocese this statement finds a real embodiment in life: diocesan and parish newspapers and magazines are published; one of the most visited Orthodox Internet portals in the Russian Internet is maintained; youth associations are created; there are Sunday schools for adults and children; Cooperation with schools and universities is being strengthened.

One of the most significant elements of the educational and missionary activity of the diocese is preaching. And Vladyka constantly addresses his numerous flock with paternal instruction not only from the ambo, but also through modern media: he gives interviews, takes part in radio and television programs, online conferences; communicates with Internet users: on the information and analytical portal of the Saratov Diocese "Orthodoxy and Modernity" there has been a section "Question to the Bishop" for many years.

And the questions that are being asked of the bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church today are very diverse. And yet, in the main, almost all of them are about the attitude of the Church to the phenomena of the modern world that determine our life, both external and internal; about how to become a Christian in spite of the overwhelming consumerist spirit of the time, when the gap between what secular society demands of us and what the Lord expects of us is widening. It is important for a Christian to correlate his understanding of topical problems with the position of the Church, in order to preserve the Orthodox faith in all circumstances of life, to preserve moral purity, family tradition and devotion to his people and Fatherland.

The collection "Man Cannot Live Without God" includes articles and conversations by Bishop Longin of Saratov and Volsk, as well as his answers to questions from visitors to the portal "Orthodoxy and Modernity" and correspondents of various publications: news agencies "Interfax", "SaratovBusinessConsulting", "Vzglyad-info", federal and regional issues of the newspapers "Izvestia", "Rossiyskaya Gazeta", "Moskovsky Komsomolets", "Arguments and Facts", magazines "Alpha and Omega", "Foma", "Neskuchny Sad", "Orthodoxy and Modernity".

In Vladyka's opinion, the greatest lie of our time is to assert that we live in a post-Christian era, that is, in a world without God, for the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8) — always with us. But how we will live, each person decides for himself. And may the word of Vladyka help someone to overcome the barrier on the path to churching, on the path to God, help someone to make the main life choice: who is he with?
