The Gospel of Luke

And there was also a certain beggar, Lazarus by name, who lay at his gate covered with scabs

And he desired to eat the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and the dogs came and licked his scabs.

And the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died, and he was buried.

And in hell, being in torments, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom

And he cried out, and said, 'Father Abraham! have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the end of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.

But Abraham said, 'Child! remember that you have already received your good in your life, and Lazarus has received your evil; but now he is comforted here, and you suffer;

And besides all this, a great gulf has been established between us and you, so that those who will pass from here to you cannot pass over from there to us.

Then he said, 'I beseech you, father, send him to my father's house,

For I have five brothers; let him testify to them, so that they also do not come to this place of torment.

Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.

And he said, 'No, Father Abraham, but if any man from the dead comes to them, they will repent.'

Then *Abraham* said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, even if someone were to rise from the dead, they will not believe.'
