О готовности во всякое время и о неукоснительном тщании тех, которые стараются о благоугождении Богу

Глава 1. Зная опасность коснения, всегда должно трезвиться и быть готовым к тщательному совершению дела Божия.

(Лк.12:35–40): «Да будут чресла ваши препоясаны и светильники горящи. И вы будьте подобны людям, ожидающим возвращения господина своего с брака, дабы, когда придёт и постучит, тотчас отворить ему. Блаженны рабы те, которых господин, придя, найдёт бодрствующими; истинно говорю вам, он препояшется и посадит их, и, подходя, станет служить им. И если придет во вторую стражу, и в третью стражу придет, и найдет их так, то блаженны рабы те. Вы знаете, что если бы ведал хозяин дома, в который час придет вор, то бодрствовал бы и не допустил бы подкопать дом свой. Будьте же и вы готовы, ибо, в который час не думаете, приидет Сын Человеческий» и проч.

(1 Сол.5:1–2): «О временах же и сроках нет нужды писать к вам, братия, ибо сами вы достоверно знаете, что день Господень так придет, как тать ночью». И несколько ниже (1 Сол.5:6): «Итак, не будем спать, как и прочие, но будем бодрствовать и трезвиться».

Chapter 2. Every time should be considered convenient for the thorough accomplishment of what is pleasing to God.

(John 9:4): "I must do the works of Him who sent Me, while there is a day."

(Phil. 2:12): "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always been obedient, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling."

Rule 14.

On the Timeliness of Each Case Taken Separately

One should not confuse that which is not related to one another; but for each deed or word it is necessary to know its own time.

(Matthew 9:14-15): "Then the disciples of John came to Him and said, 'Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, and Your disciples do not fast? And Jesus said to them, Can the sons of the bridal chamber grieve while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast," and so on.

(Galatians 4:31-5:1): "Therefore, brethren, we are not the children of slaves, but of free women. Stand therefore in the freedom which Christ has given us, and do not again be subjected to the yoke of slavery."

Rule 15.

On the hope of other people's merits

One should not rely on the merits of others, neglect one's own.
