27 And he said to them, 'This is what the Lord God of Israel says, 'Put every man his sword on his thigh, and go through the camp from gate to gate and back again, and kill every man his brother, every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.'

28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses, 'And about three thousand men fell that day out of the people.'

29 For Moses said to [them], 'Today dedicate your hands to the Lord, every man in his son and brother, that he may send you a blessing this day.'

30 On the morrow Moses said to the people, 'You have committed a great sin; therefore I will ascend to the Lord, lest I atone for your sin.

31 And Moses returned to the Lord, and said, 'O [Lord!] this people have committed a great sin: they have made for themselves a god of gold;

32 Forgive them their sin, and if not, blot me also out of thy book in which thou hast written.

33 And the Lord said unto Moses, He that hath sinned against me, I will blot out of my book;

34 therefore go, [go down,] lead this people whither I have told you; behold, my angel shall go before thee, and in the day of my visitation I will visit them for their sin.

35 And the Lord smote the people because of the calf which Aaron had made.

Chapter 33

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, depart from hence, thou and the people whom thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, into the land of which I swore to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, To thy seed I will give it;

2 And I will send an angel before thee, and I will drive out the Canaanites, and the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites,

3 [and he will bring you] into a land flowing with milk and honey; for I myself will not go among you, lest I destroy you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.

4 And when the people heard this terrible word, they wept, and no one put on his ornaments.
