But they were troubled for a short time for admonition, having received the sign of salvation, in remembrance of the commandment of thy law,

For he that turneth was healed, not by that which he looked, but by thee, the Saviour of all.

And by this thou hast shewed our enemies that thou art the deliverer of all evil;

For they were killed by the wounds of locusts and flies, and there was no medicine for their souls, because they were worthy to be tormented by them.

And even the teeth of poisonous serpents have not prevailed against thy sons, for thy mercy hath come to their aid, and hath healed them.

Though they were wounded because they were reminded of thy words, yet they were soon healed, lest, having fallen into deep forgetfulness thereof, they should not be deprived of thy beneficence.

It was not herb or plaster that healed them, but Thy all-healing word, O Lord.

Thou hast the power of life and death, and hast brought down unto the gates of hell, and hast raised up.

A man killeth in his wickedness, but he cannot bring back the spirit that has departed, neither can he summon the soul that has been taken.

But Thy hand cannot be escaped,

For the wicked, who have denied to know thee, are chastened by the power of thy arm, being persecuted by strange rains, hailstorms, and unavoidable storms, and consumed by fire.

But the most wonderful thing was that the fire had a stronger effect in the water, which extinguishes everything, for the very world is a champion for the righteous.

Sometimes the flames were tamed, that they might not burn the beasts that were sent against the wicked, and that when they saw this, they might know that they were persecuted by the judgment of God.

And sometimes even in the midst of the water it burned more than the fire, to destroy the produce of the unrighteous land.
