Thou hast the power of life and death, and hast brought down unto the gates of hell, and hast raised up.

A man killeth in his wickedness, but he cannot bring back the spirit that has departed, neither can he summon the soul that has been taken.

But Thy hand cannot be escaped,

For the wicked, who have denied to know thee, are chastened by the power of thy arm, being persecuted by strange rains, hailstorms, and unavoidable storms, and consumed by fire.

But the most wonderful thing was that the fire had a stronger effect in the water, which extinguishes everything, for the very world is a champion for the righteous.

Sometimes the flames were tamed, that they might not burn the beasts that were sent against the wicked, and that when they saw this, they might know that they were persecuted by the judgment of God.

And sometimes even in the midst of the water it burned more than the fire, to destroy the produce of the unrighteous land.

Instead of this, thou hast nourished thy people with the food of angels, and hast sent unto them, those who have not labored, bread ready from heaven, which had every pleasantness according to the taste of every one.

For the quality of Thy food showed Thy love for children, and to the satisfaction of the desire of the eater was changed according to the taste of each.

And the snow and the ice withstood the fire, and did not melt, that they might know that the fire that burned in the hail, and resplendent in the rains, consumed the fruit of the enemies.

But the same fire, that the righteous might be nourished, lost its power.

For the creature, serving Thee the Creator, strives to punish the wicked, and is quiet for the benefit of those who believe in Thee.

Wherefore even then, being changed in all things, she obeyed thy grace, which nourisheth all, according to the desire of those in need,

that thy sons, whom thou hast loved, O Lord, may know that it is not the generations of fruit that nourish man, but that thy word preserves them that believe in thee.
