Preface

The present translation of the New Testament was begun in 1953, with the support of the British and Foreign Bible Society, by a group of translators led by the well-known Russian biblical scholar Ep. Kassian (Bezobrazov, 1892-1965). It also included Archpriest Nikolai Kulomzin, Baptist pastor A. Vasiliev and their students. Writer Boris Zaitsev took part in the literary editing of the text.

Initially, the Commission for the Translation of the New Testament into Russian at the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris, which Bishop Cassian headed from 1951 to 1964, was only supposed to revise the Synodal translation. However, over time, the members of the Commission came to the conclusion that a new Russian version of the New Testament part of the Bible was needed. Cassian's version of the New Testament took into account the achievements of biblical textual criticism, the connection of the New Testament Koine with the Hebrew and Aramaic languages, as well as some changes that have occurred in the Russian language since the first publication of the Synodal Translation. A new translation was published in its entirety by the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1970.

Cassian's version was the first complete Russian translation of the New Testament in the 20th century, made in accordance with the norms of modern science on the translation of the Holy Scriptures.
