Text of the Lectionary in the Synodal translation

Brethren, we are the children of the promise according to Isaac. But as then he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also now. What does the Scripture say? Cast out the servant and her son, for the son of the slave shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. And so, brethren, we are not the children of slaves, but of a free woman. Stand therefore, in the freedom which Christ has given us, and do not again be subjected to the yoke of slavery. Behold, I, Paul, say to you, if you are circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. Again, I testify to every man who is circumcised that he must fulfill the whole law. You, who justify yourselves by the law, have been left without Christ, have fallen from grace, but we in the Spirit expect and hope for righteousness from faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has power, but faith working through love. You walked well: who stopped you from submitting to the truth? Such a conviction is not from Him who is calling you. The small leaven leavens the whole dough. I am confident of you in the Lord that you will not think otherwise; but he who troubles you, whoever he may be, will bear condemnation.

Galatians 4:28–5:10

Monday 16 Week

The Epistle to the Galatians, conceived 212

Brethren, why then do they persecute me, if even now I preach circumcision? Then the temptation of the cross would cease. Oh, that those who trouble you would be removed! You have been called to freedom, brethren, so that your freedom may not be an occasion for pleasing the flesh, but serve one another with love. For the whole law is contained in one word: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. But if you bite and eat one another, take heed that you are not destroyed by one another. I say, walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, for the flesh desires that which is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit that which is contrary to the flesh: they oppose one another, so that you do not what you would have done. But if you are led by the Spirit, then you are not under the law. The works of the flesh are known; they are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, envy, anger, strife, dissension, heresies, hatred, murder, drunkenness, disorder, and the like. I forewarn you, as I did before, that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:11–21

Tuesday, the 16th week

The Epistle to the Galatians, conceived 213

Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control. There is no law on them. But those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with passions and lusts. If we live in the spirit, then we must act in the spirit. Let us not be vain, irritate each other, envy each other. Brethren, even if a man falls into any sin, you, who are spiritual, correct him in a spirit of meekness, watching each one for himself, so that he may not be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

The Epistle to the Galatians, conceived 214

Brethren, bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ. For whoever considers himself to be something, being nothing, deceives himself. Let each one examine his own work, and then he will have praise only in himself, and not in another, for each will bear his own burden. Being instructed by the word, share all good things with the one who instructs. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. What a man sows, that he will also reap: he who sows in his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but he who sows in the spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. In doing good, let us not lose heart, for in due time we shall reap, if we do not faint. Therefore, while there is time, let us do good to all, and especially to our own in faith.
