Chapter I.

1. The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Israel, in Jerusalem.

2. Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes, vanity of vanities, all is vanity!

3. What profit[1] does a man do in all his labor under the sun?

4. A generation passes away, and a generation comes, but the earth stands for ever[2].

5. And the sun rises, and the sun sets, and strives for its place[3] when it rises[4],

6. He goes south and returns to the north, going around[5]. The wind blows and the wind returns to its circles[6].

7. All the streams flow into the sea, but the sea is not satisfied: to the place from which the streams come, thither they flow back[7].

8. All things[8] are troubled[9]: a man will not be able to speak, nor will the eye be satisfied with sight, nor will the ear be satisfied[10] with hearing[11].

9. That which was, that is, and will also be, and that which has been done, will also be done[12].

10. And there is nothing new under the sun. (If) anyone had said thus, "Behold, this is new," it was already in the ages that had passed before us[14].

11. There is no remembrance of the first (people),[15] and there will be no remembrance of those who will live to last[16].
