How to Read the Bible

11.15–20. Although the Glory of Yahweh has left Jerusalem, it will not forsake the faithful in exile. The Lord Himself will be for them a kind of sanctuary (literally, "small[88] sanctuary") in a foreign land. This meant that the Spirit of God was at work not only in one place on earth, but everywhere where people called on the name of the Lord (cf. John 3:8). A community created in a foreign land will find unity of spirit, and the heart of the faithful will be transformed, enlightened by grace.

5. The Lord is the Shepherd of His people (Ezekiel 34)

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 Son of man! prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them shepherds, Thus saith the Lord God, Woe unto the shepherds of Israel, who have shepherded themselves. Should not shepherds feed the flock?

3 You ate fat, and clothed yourselves,89 and you slaughtered the fattened sheep, but you did not feed the flocks.

4 They did not strengthen the weak, nor heal the sick sheep, nor bind up the wounded, nor bring back that which was driven away, nor seek the lost, but ruled them with violence and cruelty.

5 And they were scattered without a shepherd, and being scattered, they became food for every beast of the field.

6 My sheep are wandering in all the mountains, and in every high hill, and my sheep are scattered over all the face of the earth, and no one searches for them, and no one seeks them.

7 Therefore, shepherds, hear the word of the Lord.

8 I live! saith the Lord God; because my sheep were left to be plundered, and my sheep became food for every beast of the field without a shepherd, and my shepherds did not seek my sheep, but the shepherds fed themselves, but did not feed my sheep,

9 therefore, shepherds, hear the word of the Lord.

10 Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will seek my sheep out of their hand, and I will give them no more to feed the sheep, and the shepherds shall no more feed themselves, and I will pluck my sheep out of their jaws, and they shall not be their food.

11 For thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I myself will seek out my sheep, and examine them.
