How to Read the Bible

1 The prayer of the afflicted, when he is discouraged, and pours out his sorrow before the Lord. 2 Lord! hear my prayer, and let my cry come to Thee. 3 Hide not thy face from me; in the day of my trouble incline Thy ear unto me; in the day when I call upon Thee, hear me quickly; 4 For my days are gone like smoke, and my bones are burned like a brand; 5 My heart is broken, and is parched like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread; 6 At the voice of my groaning, my bones clung to my flesh. 7 I am like a pelican in the wilderness; I have become like an owl in ruins; 8 I do not sleep and sit like a lonely bird on the roof. 9 My enemies reproach me all the day, and they that are angry with me curse me. 10 I eat ashes as bread, and I dissolve my drink with tears, 11 because of thy wrath and thy indignation, for thou hast lifted me up, and hast cast me down. 12 My days are like a departing shadow, and I am withered like grass. 13 But thou, O Lord, abide for ever, and thy remembrance endureth to generations and generations. 14 Thou shalt arise, thou shalt have compassion on Zion, for the time is ripe for her to have mercy on her, for the time has come; 15 For thy servants have loved his stones, and they have pity on his dust. 16 And the nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth shall fear thy glory. 17 For the LORD shall build up Zion, and shall appear in his glory; 18 He will look upon the prayer of the helpless, and will not despise their supplication. 19 These things shall be written for the generation to come, and the generation to come shall praise the Lord, 20 for he has come down from his holy height, the Lord has looked down from heaven upon the earth, 21 to hear the groans of the prisoners, to loose the sons of death, 22 that they may proclaim in Zion the name of the Lord, and his praise in Jerusalem, 23 when the nations and kingdoms shall be gathered together to serve the Lord. 24 He hath worn out my strength in the way, hath shortened my days. E-25 I said, "My God! Do not rapture me in the half of my days. Thy years in the birth of childbirth. 26 In the beginning Thou didst founded the earth, and the heavens were the work of Thy hands; 27 they shall perish, but Thou shalt remain; and they shall all be worn out like a garment, and as a garment Thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed; 28 but thou art the same, and thy years shall not end. 29 The sons of thy servants shall live, and their seed shall be established before thee.

1 Praise the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let the house of Israel say this day, For his mercy endures for ever. 3 Let the house of Aaron say this day, For his mercy endures for ever. 4 Let them that fear the Lord now say, For his mercy endures for ever. 5 Out of the distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me, and the Lord brought me out into a wide place. 6 The Lord is for me, I will not be afraid: what shall man do to me? 7 The Lord is my helper: I will look upon my enemies. 8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in man. 9 It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in princes. 10 All the nations have surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I have brought them down; 11 They have encircled me, they have surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I have put them down; 12 They have surrounded me like bees, and have been quenched like fire in thorns: in the name of the Lord I have cast them down. 13 They pushed me hard to fall, but the Lord sustained me. 14 The Lord is my strength and my song; He became my salvation. 15 A voice of joy and salvation in the dwellings of the righteous: The right hand of the Lord doth worketh power. 16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted, the right hand of the Lord creates power! 17 I will not die, but I will live, and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord chastised me severely, but he did not put me to death. 19 Open unto me the gates of righteousness; I will enter into them, I will glorify the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous will enter into them. 21 I praise thee, that thou hast heard me, and hast become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders rejected was made the head of the corner: 23 this is from the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it! 25 O Lord, save me! O Lord, make haste! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 God is the Lord, and has shone upon us; bind the sacrifice with ropes, lead it to the horns of the altar. 28 Thou art my God: I will praise thee; Thou art my God: I will exalt Thee. 29 Praise the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever.

1 Praise the Lord, for it is good to sing to our God, for it is sweet, a praise that is fitting. 2 The Lord builds Jerusalem, gathers the exiles of Israel. 3 He healeth the brokenhearted, and healeth their afflictions; 4 calculates the number of stars; He calls them all by their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and great is His might, and His understanding is immeasurable. 6 The Lord exalteth the humble, but the wicked he humbles to the earth. 7 Sing the praises to the Lord in turn; sing to our God on the harp. 8 He covers the heavens with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, brings forth grass on the mountains; 9 He gives his food to the cattle, and to the young of the raven that cry unto him. 10 He does not look at the strength of the horse, nor does He delight in the swiftness of men's feet, 11 the Lord is pleased with those who fear Him, with those who trust in His mercy.

10. Pilgrims' Songs (Psalm 83, 119-122, 123[131], 124, 129, 130, 132, 133)

These psalms were sung during the pilgrims' journeys to Jerusalem.

1 To the head of the choir. On the gun of Gath. Sons of Korah. Psalm. 2 How desirable are Thy dwellings, O Lord of hosts! 3 My soul is weary, longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh delight in the living God. 4 And the bird finds for himself a dwelling, and the swallow a nest for himself, where to lay his young, at thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God! 5 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they shall praise thee without ceasing. 6 Blessed is the man whose strength is in Thee, and whose paths are directed to Thee in his heart. 7 Passing through the valley of weeping, they open springs in it, and the rain covers it with blessing; 8 come from strength to power, appear before God in Zion. 9 O Lord God Almighty! Hear my prayer, hearken, O God of Jacob! 10 O God, our defender! Bow down and look upon the face of Thy anointed. 11 For one day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be at the threshold in the house of God than live in the tents of wickedness. 12 For the Lord God is the sun and the shield, the Lord giveth grace and glory; He does not deprive those who walk in chastity of blessings. 13 O Lord of hosts! Blessed is the man who trusts in You!

1 Song of ascent. I cried unto the Lord in my affliction, and he heard me. 2 Lord! deliver my soul from lying lips, from the tongue of evil. 3 What shall the wicked tongue give thee, and what shall the wicked tongue add unto thee? 4 The sophisticated arrows of the strong, with burning gorse coals. 5 Woe is me, that I dwell with Mosoch, dwell at the tents of Kidar. 6 Long has my soul dwelt with them that hate the world. 7 I am peaceful: but as soon as I speak, they are for war.

1 Song of ascent. I lift up my eyes to the mountains, whence my help will come. 2 My help is from the Lord, who created heaven and earth. 3 He will not let thy foot be shaken, nor shall he that keepeth thee slumber; 4 He that keepeth Israel sleepeth not, nor sleepeth. 5 The Lord is thy guardian; The Lord is thy shadow from thy right hand. 6 By day the sun shall not smite thee, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all evil; the Lord will preserve your soul. 8 The Lord will watch over your going out and your going in from now on and forever.

1 Song of ascent. David. I rejoiced when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. 2 Behold, our feet stand in thy gate, O Jerusalem, 3 Jerusalem, built as a city united into one, 4 whither the tribes ascend, the tribes of the Lord, according to the law of Israel, to glorify the name of the Lord. 5 There stand the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Ask for peace to Jerusalem: that those who love you may prosper. 7 May there be peace within thy walls, prosperity in thy palaces! 8 For the sake of my brethren and my neighbors I say, Peace be unto thee. 9 For the house of the Lord our God, I wish you well.
