How to Read the Bible
1 Song of ascent. To Thee I lift up my eyes, O Thou who dwellest in heaven! 2 Behold, as the eyes of servants are turned to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a servant are to the hand of her mistress, so are our eyes to the Lord our God, until he has mercy on us. 3 Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for we are filled enough with contempt; 4 Our soul is sufficiently filled with reproach from the haughty, and humiliation from the proud.
1 Song of ascent. David. He that trusteth in the Lord, like Mount Zion, shall not be moved: he shall abide for ever. 2 The mountains are round about Jerusalem, and the Lord is round about his people from now on and forever. 3 For the Lord will not leave the rod of the wicked over the lot of the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to iniquity. 4 Do good, O Lord, to the good and upright in your hearts; 5 And let the Lord leave them that turn astray into their crooked ways to walk with them that practice iniquity. Peace be upon Israel!
1 Song of ascent. From the depths I cry out to Thee, O Lord. 2 Lord! Hear my voice. Let Thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3 If thou, O Lord, take heed iniquity, O Lord! Who will stand? 4 But with Thee is forgiveness, that they may reverence Thee. 5 I trust in the Lord, my soul hopes; I trust in His word. 6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning, more than the watchmen for the morning. 7 Let Israel trust in the Lord, for with the Lord is mercy, and with him is much deliverance, 8 and he will deliver Israel from all their iniquities.
1 Song of ascent. David. God! my heart was not haughty, nor were my eyes lifted up, and I did not enter into the great things that were beyond my reach. 2 Have I not humbled and comforted my soul, as a child weaned from its mother's breast? my soul was in me like a child weaned from the breast. 3 Let Israel trust in the Lord from now on and forever.
1 Song of ascent. David. How good and how pleasant it is for the brothers to live together! 2 It is like precious oil on the head, flowing down on the beard, Aaron's beard, dripping down on the hems of his garment; 3 as the dew of Hermon, which descendeth upon the mounts of Zion: for there the Lord hath commanded blessing and life for ever.
1 Song of ascent. Bless the Lord now, all the servants of the Lord standing in the house of the Lord during the night. 2 Lift up your hands to the sanctuary, and bless the Lord. 3 The Lord of Zion, who made the heavens and the earth, will bless you.
11. Good and Evil in the Face of God (Psalms 11, 13, 14, 25, 33-35, 40, 51, 72, 91, 100, 108, 111, 126, 127)
1 To the head of the choir. On an eight-string one. Psalm of David. 2 Save me, O Lord, for the righteous is no more, for there is none faithful among the sons of men. 3 Every man speaks lies to his neighbor; the lips are flattering, they speak from a pretended heart. 4 The Lord will destroy all flattering lips, 5 those who say, "With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; Who is our master"? 6 For the affliction of the poor, and the groaning of the poor, I will now arise, saith the Lord, I will put in safety him whom they seek to catch. 7 The words of the Lord are pure words, silver cleansed from the earth in the furnace, refined seven times. 8 Thou, O Lord, shalt keep them, thou shalt keep them from this generation for ever. 9 The wicked walk everywhere, when the least of the sons of men have been exalted.
