THE GOSPEL STORY OF GOD THE SON, WHO BECAME INCARNATE FOR OUR SALVATION, SET FORTH IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER IN THE WORDS OF THE HOLY EVANGELISTS

130. The Pharisee's Dinner: The Parable of the Great Supper at a Certain

Lux. 14, 15–24

And when one of those who sat at table with him, he said to him, "Blessed is he who eateth bread in the kingdom of God!" And he said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and called many. And when the time for supper came, he sent his servant to say to those who were called, "Go, for everything is ready."

And everyone, as if by agreement, began to apologize. The first said to him, "I have bought land, and I must go to see it; Please forgive me. Another said, "I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them; Please forgive me. A third said, "I am married, and therefore I cannot come."

And when the servant returned, he reported it to his master. Then, being angry, the master of the house said to his servant, "Go quickly through the streets and alleys of the city, and bring hither the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind." And the servant said, "Lord! it has been fulfilled as you have commanded, and there is still room. The lord said to the servant, "Go out into the highways and hedges, and persuade me to come, that my house may be filled." For I say unto you, that none of those who are invited shall partake of my supper. For many are called, but few are chosen.

131. Lessons on the Path: On Detachment from Relatives and Bearing the Cross

Lux. 14, 25–27

A multitude of people went with the Lord; And he turned and said to them, "If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and moreover his very life, he cannot be my disciple."

And whoever does not bear his cross and follows Me cannot be My disciple.

132. Lessons on the Way: Parables on the Building of a Tower, War, and Salt

Lux. 14, 15–24

For who among you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, whether he has what is necessary to complete it, so that when he lays the foundation and is not able to complete it, all those who see will not laugh at him, saying, This man began to build and could not finish?

Or what king, going to war against another king, does not sit down and consult first, whether he is strong with ten thousand to resist him who is coming against him with twenty thousand? Otherwise, while he was still far away, he would send an embassy to him to ask for peace. So whosoever of you does not renounce all that he has, cannot be My disciple.

Salt is a good thing; But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be corrected? it is not good for earth or dung; throw it away. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!
