THE GOSPEL STORY OF GOD THE SON, WHO BECAME INCARNATE FOR OUR SALVATION, SET FORTH IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER IN THE WORDS OF THE HOLY EVANGELISTS

But Abraham said, "Child! remember that you have already received your good in your life, and Lazarus has received evil; but now he is comforted here, and you suffer. And in addition to all this, a great gulf has been established between you and us, so that those who wish to pass from here to you cannot pass over to us.

Then he said, "I beseech thee, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers; let him testify to them, so that they also do not come to this place of torment. Abraham said to him, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them. And he said, "No, father"

Abraham! but if any one from the dead comes to them, they will repent. Then Abraham said to him, "If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, then even if someone rises from the dead, they will not believe."

137. Miscellaneous Instruction to Disciples

Lux. 17, 1–10

The Lord also said to His disciples: It is impossible not to come to temptations, but woe to him through whom they come. It would have been better for him if a millstone had been hung around his neck and thrown into the sea, than that he had offended one of these little ones.

Watch yourselves. But if your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and turns seven times a day, and says, I repent, forgive him.

And the Apostles said to the Lord, "Increase faith in us." The Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, and said to this fig tree, 'Be plucked up, and be transplanted into the sea,' she would have obeyed you."

Which of you, having a servant ploughing or shepherding, when he returns from the field, will say to him, "Go quickly, sit down at table?" On the contrary, will he not say to him, "Prepare me supper, and gird yourself up, serve me while I eat and drink, and then eat and drink yourself?" Will he thank this servant for having carried out the command? I don't think so. In the same way, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, We are worthless servants, because we have done what we ought to have done.

138. The Healing of the Ten Lepers

Lux. 17, 11–19

Going to Jerusalem, the Lord passed between Samaria and Galilee. And as he was entering into a certain village, ten lepers met him, who stopped afar off, and said with a loud voice, Jesus, Teacher! have mercy on us. Seeing them, the Lord said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned, glorifying God with a loud voice, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving thanks to him; and it was a Samaritan. Then the Lord Jesus said, "Have not ten been cleansed? Where are the nine? How did they not return to give glory to God, except for this foreigner? And he said to him, Arise, go; Your faith has saved you.

139. On the Coming of the Kingdom of God
