3) Возбуждает воздыхание сердечное и молитву, так что с пророком будет вопить ко Господу: Не входи в суд с рабом Твоим, ибо не оправдается пред Тобою никто из живых (Пс 142:2).

4) Приводит к терпению, так как человек, когда здесь наказывается как-нибудь, при­знавать будет, что достойно наказывается, го­воря с Псаломником: Праведен Ты, Господи, и праведны суды Твои (Пс 118:137). Итак, при­знавая свою виновность и Божие праведное наказание, покроет молчанием уста свои. Ибо Бог никого не обидит, но, что ни делает, пра­ведно делает.

5) Рассуждая о Божией правде и своей виновности, не только будет терпеть при­ключающееся зло, но и будет желать и про­сить, чтобы здесь наказан был, дабы с миром не осудиться. Ибо лучше здесь кратко и легко наказанным быть, нежели там вечно и жесто­ко. Рассуждай же о правде Божией и будешь неподвижен ко всякому бесчинному деянию, страхом, как гвоздями, пригвожден. Рассуж­дай о правде Божией, и будешь с усердием каяться за прежние грехи, будешь воздыхать и молиться усердно об отпущении грехов, будешь терпеть всякое приключившееся бед­ствие.

Письмо сорок четвертое

За что, спрашиваешь, люди благочести­вые наказываются и страдают здесь, как ви­дим и в Писании читаем?

Answer.

1) And pious people are not without sin, and sin is not without punishment, therefore the pious are punished by God here, so that they will not be punished there. Of this the Apostle says: "But being judged, we are chastened by the Lord, lest we be condemned with the world" (1 Corinthians 11:32).

2) God sends punishment to the pious out of love, and not out of anger. As a father punishes his children: he punishes them, but does not kill them, beats them, but does not kill them. The Apostle speaks of this punishment: "The Lord chastens whom He loves; but he smites every son whom he receives. If you endure chastisement, God treats you as sons. For is there any son whom the father does not chasten (Hebrews 12:6-7)? And here the truth of God is shown, which does not leave even small sins unpunished, although it is united with mercy and love for mankind.

3) He pours out the wrath of His wrath on the wicked, and destroys their memory on earth, and, depriving them of temporal life, deprives them of eternal life. Such a punishment befell the Sodomites, who lived under Noah, Pharaoh and others.

Consider this and beware of sin, which entails both temporal and eternal punishment.
