Controversy over the Apostles' Creed

A collection of works on the history of the ancient Church under the general title "Disputes about the Apostolic Symbol. The History of Dogmas" belongs to the pen of the outstanding Russian church historian Alexei Petrovich Lebedev (1845–1908). A professor at the Moscow Theological Academy, an emeritus professor at Moscow University, he equally brilliantly combined the talents of a great scholar and a thoughtful critic. All his works, collected for the first time in such a composition and little known even to specialists because of their scattering in various theological journals, are devoted to one theme – the reconstruction of the true image of historical Orthodoxy. In defending the Orthodox Church from the attacks of German Protestant theological scholarship, A. P. Lebedev is doing an extremely important work. This is the preservation of one's own image, one's true face by Russian ecclesiastical history, of genuinely Russian theology on purely Orthodox soil. And this matter, this task is especially important today, against the background of the re-establishment of Russian spirituality and Russian spiritual science.

The themes of his works in this book are extremely diverse and interesting. This is both the defense of the Apostles' Creed, and the defense of the need for the Symbol of Faith in the Church in general; a series of articles devoted to the life and works of Constantine the Great; original and thoughtful analysis and criticism of the main works of A. Harnack; The Roman Empire at the time of its adoption of Christianity.

The book is published as part of the collected works of the outstanding Russian historian of the Church A. P. Lebedev.
