Amidst the difficulties of the modern life of Russian society, surrounded by atheism, heterodoxy and sectarianism, schisms and heresies, in spite of the propaganda of evil, violence, acquisitiveness, unprecedented depravity and new, previously unthinkable temptations, in the face of the still unknown trials of the 21st century, the Russian Orthodox Church summed up her spiritual experience during the 20th century. With the blood of her martyrs, the Russian Church prepared herself for the entry into the third millennium.

Our grateful acceptance of this experience of holiness can bring us back together. By pointing to the host of saints of modern times and calling to seek their prayerful intercession, the Church fulfills her maternal duty towards the people who await sanctification from Her.

"In glorifying the podvig of the New Martyrs, the Russian Orthodox Church trusts in their intercession and prays that the Lord may show His mercy upon us and give all our compatriots time for repentance, kindle in their hearts the fire of faith, zeal for the rebirth of Holy Russia, our earthly Fatherland."

I wish all readers to be inflamed with zeal for salvation, hope for God's help in the straitened circumstances of our life. Through the prayers of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia of the twentieth century, may the Lord grant us to labor for the glory of God and the Church of Christ for eternal salvation.

The first book of the multi-volume edition of Lives of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia of the Twentieth Century of the Moscow Diocese includes the lives of 62 ascetics glorified in the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.

The order in which the lives in the collection are arranged is determined by the ancient hagiographic tradition. All the lives are placed in chronological order according to the days of memory of the ascetics. This volume includes the lives of those whose memory fell on the months of January and May inclusive.

Внутри каждого месяца жития распределены по числам датам памяти, которые указаны по старому стилю, а в скобках указывается гражданский новый стиль. День памяти может не совпадать с фактическим днем кончины подвижника в том случае, если кончина случилась в день двунадесятого или другого великого праздника. В этом случае память святого перенесена на другой день.

Память каждого подвижника, согласно Определению Юбилейного Архиерейского Собора о канонизации новомучеников и исповедников Российских ХХ века, совершается в день кончины и в день празднования Собора новомучеников и исповедников Российских 25 января (7 февраля), если этот день совпадет с воскресным днем, а если этот день не совпадет с воскресным днем, то в ближайшее воскресенье после 25 января (7 февраля).

У некоторых мучеников и исповедников пока не удалось установить точный день кончины, поэтому их память совершается только в день Собора новомучеников и исповедников Российских.

Некоторые подвижники объединены в одном житии по причине того, что служили в одном храме или благочинии и (или) были арестованы по одному делу. Они также могли пострадать не в один день, однако память их, согласно церковной традиции, совершается вместе в один день.

В большинстве случаев удалось найти фотографии мучеников и исповедников. Они публикуются в данном сборнике вместе с житием. Поскольку труд создания икон еще ждет своих усердных делателей–иконописцев, составители сборника выражают надежду, что данный материал явится для них неоценимым подспорьем.
