Смерть одного из ближайших друзей Гоголя, Н. М. Языкова. 11 января (н. ст.). Цензурное разрешение № 1 журнала «Современник» со статьей Белинского «Взгляд на русскую литературу 1846 года», в которой Белинский определяет значение натуральной школы и ее главы — Гоголя в истории русской литературы, и с его же рецензией на 2-е издание «Мертвых душ» с предисловием Гоголя, которое, по словам Белинского, «внушает живые опасения за авторскую славу в будущем» и «грозит русской литературе новою великою потерею прежде времени». «Собрание сочинений Белинского в трех томах», т. Ответ Гоголя на упреки С. Т. Аксакова в мистицизме и «новом направлении» творчества. Просьба к Н. М. Языкову (о смерти которого Гоголь еще не знал) прислать летописи, изданные Археографической комиссией, «Царские выходы» и книги И. М. Снегирева — «Народные праздники» и «Русские в своих пословицах». On the same day, Gogol wrote two soothing letters to his mother in response to the desperate letters of her and her elder sisters, who were shocked by the fragment of the "Testament" sent to them, which they understood as a warning of Gogol's imminent death. February 4 (New Style).

Gogol's quarrel with A. A. Ivanov because of the latter's letter, in which he recommended Gogol to take the position of secretary of the director of Russian artists in Rome. Letter No 109.

Gogol began to solicit permission and preparation for publication of the second, complete edition of "Selected Places". Letters NoNo 110, 111.

Early February (New Style).

Censorship permission No 2 of the magazine "Sovremennik" with an article by Belinsky containing a harsh assessment of "Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends", this "perhaps the strangest and most instructive book that has ever appeared in the Russian language". "Belinsky's Collected Works in Three Volumes", Vol. III, p. 687.

February 16 (New Style).

Gogol notifies his mother that 2000 rubles will be sent to her and her sisters by his order. Letter No 118.

February 28 (New Style).

Gogol's requests to P. A. Vyazemsky and A. O. Rosset to consider his book (including passages not allowed by censorship) together with M. Y. Vielgorsky and V. A. Perovsky, in order to prepare it for the second, complete edition. Letters NoNo 120, 121.

January-February (New Style).

Gogol's first letter to the fanatic fanatic Rzhev Archpriest M. A. Konstantinovsky, which marked the beginning of the latter's disastrous influence on Gogol. Letter No 122.
