Finally, a letter from you. How happy I was with him! It's been a long time since you gave me your lines. In your lines shines as before the pearl – your soul, the same childish cordiality and the same brotherly love for me. May God reward you for all this. I will tell you that I was bored without letters from people who loved me, especially now, when every word from Russia is so dear to me, and when I would like to know everything that is said about me. My soul also needed a somewhat refreshing word, because I was exhausted. Give the following letter to Vladimir Alexandrovich* and ask him to fulfill my request on his own behalf. Embrace all your men and kiss them, and ask the Countess, your mother, and Mr<Raf> Michael Yuryevich, to forgive me for all my dominion with which I have bored them, for my uncouthness and all sorts of rude actions, of which I have a sufficient number, although in your kindness you turn a blind eye to many things. And do not forget most of all your kind and sometimes very necessary letters.

Хотя вы человек (как все мы, грешные русские люди мужеска пола) несколько ленивый на подъем, но авось доброе расположение ваше ко мне пересилит лень и заставит вас не только отвечать на письмо мое, но даже выполнить мою просьбу. Просьба эта очень убедительна. Вы живете в свете, видаете людей[767] всех кругов и сортов, какие ни водятся в Петербурге, будьте так милостивы и аккуратны, передайте мне их толки о моей книге. Выберите из каждого круга такого человека, который побойчее и может назваться его представителем, расспросите его и передайте мне его суд и определение. Теперь таких представителей и кругов много, потому что мнения, как я слышал, страшно разделились, и пребывает разноголосица, какой доселе не бывало. Особенно не скрывайте от меня мнений неблагоприятных, как бы они жестки ни были. Они мне теперь так же нужны, как носу табак, после которого хоть и чихнется, но во здравие и голове свежей. Итак, жду от вас доказательств вашего доброго расположения ко мне, за которое останусь вам вечно благодарен.
