Bible. Books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments
And Onan knew that the seed would not be his, so when he went in to his brother's wife, he poured it out on the ground, that he might not give the seed to his brother.
Evil was in the sight of the Lord that he did; and he put him to death also.
And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law [after the death of his two sons], 'Thou shalt dwell as a widow in thy father's house, until Shelah my son grows up.' For he said [in his mind], "He also would not die like his brethren." And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
A long time passed, and the daughter of Shuya, the wife of Judah, died. And Judas was comforted, and went to Timna to the shearers of his cattle, himself and Hira his friend, the Adullamite.
And they sent word to Tamar, saying, Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timna to shear his cattle.
And she took off the garment of her widowhood, and covered herself with a veil, and shut herself up, and sat down at the gate of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she was not given to him as a wife.
And Judas saw her, and considered her to be a harlot, because she had covered her face. [And did not recognize her.]
And he turned to her, and said, 'I will come in to you.' For he did not know that this was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me if you come to me?"
He said, 'I will send you a kid from [my] flock.' She said, "Will you give me a pledge while you send it?"
And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy seal, and thy girdle, and thy reed, which is in thy hand. And he gave it to her, and went in to her; and she conceived of him.
And she arose, and went, and took off her veil, and put on the garment of her widowhood.
And Judah sent a kid through his friend the Adullamite, to take the pledge out of the woman's hand, but he did not find her.
And he asked the inhabitants of the place, saying, 'Where is the harlot who was in Enaim by the wayside?' But they said, "There was no harlot here."
And he returned to Judas, and said, 'I have not found her; And the inhabitants of the place said, There was no harlot here.
