Bible. Books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments

35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel's sake will save it.

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what ransom shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 For whosoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of Man also be ashamed, when He shall come in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.

Chapter 9

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, there are some of them standing here that shall not taste death, till they see the kingdom of God come in power.

2 And it came to pass, at the end of six days, that Jesus took Peter, and James, and John, and brought them up into a high mountain alone, and was transfigured before them.

3 His garments became shining, exceedingly white as snow, as a bleacher cannot whiten on the ground.

4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they conversed with Jesus.

5 And Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi! it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

6 For he knew not what to say; because they were afraid.

7 And there appeared a cloud overshadowing them, and out of the cloud came a voice, saying, This is my beloved Son; Listen to him.

8 And suddenly looking around, they saw no one else with them, except Jesus alone.

9 And when they came down from the mountain, he commanded no one to tell of what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 And they kept the word, asking one another what it meant to rise from the dead.

11 And they asked him, 'How then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'

12 And he answered and said unto them, 'True, Elijah must come first, and arrange all things; and the Son of Man, as it is written of Him, must suffer much, and be humiliated.

13 But I say unto you, that Elijah also came, and they did to him as they wished, as it is written of him.

14 And when he came to the disciples, he saw a great multitude round about them, and the scribes disputing with them.

15 And immediately when they saw him, all the people were amazed, and running up, they saluted him.

16 And he asked the scribes, 'What are you disputing with them about?'
