The Bible is an eternal Book and a spiritual companion of mankind, it knows no boundaries in time and space and appeals to the hearts of people who speak hundreds of languages.

The translation of the Bible into Russian was carried out by the St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan and Kiev Theological Academies from 1856 to 1876.

The translation was based on the Russian text of the New Testament, the Psalter and the Pentateuch, which appeared as a result of the work of the Russian Bible Society in 1816-1826. The final redaction was carried out by the Holy Synod and personally by Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) of Moscow. The full text of the translation was published in 1876.

The Synodal translation is the main text of the Bible for all Christians in Russia.

The First Book of Samuel

Chapter 1

1 And there was a man of Ramathaim-zophim, of Mount Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Eli, the son of Tochu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite;

2 And he had two wives, the name of the one being Hannah, and the name of the other being Pennanah. And Pennanah had children, but Hannah had no children.

3 And this man went out of his city in the appointed days to worship, and to offer sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh; there were [Eli and] his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the Lord.
