The Old Testament (Part 2)

And in the day that Elkanah offered the sacrifice, he gave it to Pennanah his wife, and to all her sons, and to the daughters of her portion;

And he gave to Hannah a special portion, for he loved Hannah more than Pennan, though the Lord had shut up her womb.

Her rival grieved her greatly, causing her to murmur that the Lord had shut up her womb.

Thus it came to pass every year, when she went to the house of the Lord; she grieved her, but this one wept and did not eat.

And Elkanah her husband said to her, 'Hannah! And he said to her, Why do you weep, and why do you not eat, and why is your heart grieved? Am I not better for you than ten sons?

And Hannah arose, after they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, [and stood before the Lord]. And Eli the priest was then sitting on a seat at the entrance to the temple of the Lord.

And she was in sorrow of soul, and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly,

And she made a vow, saying, 'Lord [Almighty God] of hosts! If Thou lookest upon the affliction of Thy servant, and rememberest me, and forgett not Thy servant, and give Thy servant a male child, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and the razor shall not touch his head.

And while she was praying long before the Lord, Eli looked unto her lips;

And as Hannah spoke in her heart, and her lips only moved, and her voice was not heard, Eli thought her drunk.

And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunk? sober up from thy wine [and depart from the presence of the Lord].

And Anna answered, and said, 'No, my lord; I am a woman who is sorrowful in spirit, I have not drunk wine or strong drink, but I pour out my soul before the Lord.

Consider not thy servant a worthless woman, for in my great sorrow and in my sorrow I have spoken hitherto.

And Eli answered and said, 'Go in peace, and the God of Israel will grant your petition, which you asked of him.'
