The Gospel of Matthew

1

1 Genealogy of Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; Isaac begat Jacob; Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;  3 And Judah begat Perez and Zarah by Tamar; And Perez begat Hezron; And Hezrom begat Aram;  4 And Aram begat Aminadab; Aminadab begat Nahshon; Nahshon begat Salmon;  5 Salmon begat Boaz by Rahab; Boaz begat Obed by Ruth; Obed begat Jesse;  6 Jesse begat David king; David the king begat Solomon by the one who was married to Uriah;  7 Solomon begat Rehoboam; Rehoboam begat Abijah; Abijah begat Asa;  8 Asa begat Jehoshaphat; Jehoshaphat begat Jehoram; And Joram begat Uzziah;  9 Uzziah begat Jotham; Jotham begat Ahaz; Ahaz begat Hezekiah;  10 Hezekiah begat Manasseh; Manasseh begat Amun; Amon begat Josiah;  11 Josiah begat Jehoiakim; And Jehoiakim begat Jehoiachin and his brethren, before he migrated to Babylon.  12 And when Jeconiah had carried away to Babylon, he begat Shealtiel; And Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel;  13 Zerubbabel begat Abihu; Abihu begat Eliakim; Eliakim begat Azor;  14 Azor begat Zadok; Zadok begat Achim; Achim begat Eliud;  15 Eliud begat Eleazar; Eleazar begat Matthan; Matthan begat Jacob;  16 And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.  17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon to Christ fourteen generations.

18 And the birth of Jesus Christ was this: And when his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united, she was found to be with child of the Holy Ghost.  19 And Joseph her husband, being righteous, and not desiring to make her public, wanted to send her away secretly.  20 And when he had thought this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said, 'Joseph, son of David! do not be afraid to receive Mary your wife, for that which is born in her is of the Holy Spirit;  21 And he shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.  22 And all these things came to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, who said, 23 Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which means, God is with us.  24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took his wife, 25 and knew her not. And at last she gave birth to her firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus.

1 And when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, the Magi came to Jerusalem from the east, saying, 2 Where is the King of the Jews who is born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.  3 And when Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.  4 And having gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them, 'Where is Christ to be born?'  5 And they said unto him, 'In Bethlehem of Judah, for thus it is written by the prophet: 6 And thou, O Bethlehem, the land of Judah, are in no way less than the governors of Judah: for from thee shall come forth a Leader who shall shepherd my people Israel.'  7 Then Herod secretly called the Magi, and learned from them the time of the appearance of the star 8, and having sent them to Bethlehem, he said, 'Go, search carefully about the Child, and when you have found it, inform me, that I also may go and worship Him.'  9 And when they had heard the king, they departed. [And] behold, the star which they had seen in the east went before them, until at last it came and stood over the place where the child was.  10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with great joy, 11 and having entered into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him. and having opened their treasures, they brought him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  12 And having received a revelation in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed by another way to their own country.

13 And when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, 'Arise, take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I tell you, for Herod wants to seek the child to destroy him.'  14 And he arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and went into Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, who said, Out of Egypt I have called my Son.
