Catechetical and Secret Teachings

Table of Contents A Disclosure Instruction, or a Preface to the Catechetical Teachings of Our Holy Father Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. The first catechetical instruction, which leads those who are approaching baptism, to the words of the prophet Isaiah: wash yourselves, etc. (Isaiah 1:16). The second catechetical sermon, on repentance, remission of sins, and the adversary, on the words of Ezekiel: "The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him" (Ezekiel 18:20).

The third catechetical sermon, on baptism, on the words from the Epistle to the Romans: "Or do you not understand, that if we were baptized into Christ Jesus, we were baptized into His death; for we were buried with Him by baptism, and so on. (Romans 6:3-4). Fourth Catechetical Instruction, on the Ten Dogmas, on the words from the Epistle to the Colossians: "Take heed that no one deceives you with philosophy and vain flattery, according to human tradition, according to the verses of the world, and so on. (Col. 2:8).

Fifth Catechetical Instruction, on Faith, on the words from the Epistle to the Hebrews: "There is faith, the knowledge of those who trust, and so on." (Heb. 11:1). Sixth Catechetical Instruction, on the sovereignty of God, on the words: I believe in one God, and on heresies; also to the words of Isaiah: "Be ye new unto me, O isles: Israel is saved from the Lord by eternal salvation: they shall not be ashamed, nor shall they be ashamed, even for ever, and so on." (Isaiah 41:1; 45:16-17).

Seventh Catechetical Homily, on the words from the Epistle to the Ephesians: For this reason I bow my knees to the Father, and so on. (Ephesians 3:14). Eighth Catechetical Homily, on the words from the Prophet Jeremiah: "God is great and mighty, God is great in counsel, and mighty in deeds, God is the great Almighty, and the Lord will be great, and so on." (Jeremiah 32:19). Ninth Catechetical Instruction, on the words: The Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And also to the words of Job: "Who hideth this counsel from me, keep the words in your heart, but do you think I am hidden?" and so on. (Job 38:2). Tenth Catechetical Homily, on the words: And in One Lord Jesus Christ, and also on the words from the First Epistle to the Corinthians: For if the words are God, either in heaven or on earth: but to us is one God the Father, and of Him are all things, and we are with Him: and there is one Lord Jesus Christ, in Whom all things are, and we are in Him and so forth. (1 Corinthians 8:5-6).

The Eleventh Catechetical Instruction, on the words: The Only-begotten Son of God, Who was born of the Father, before all ages, the true God, in Whom all things were. And also to the words from the Epistle to the Hebrews: "In many parts and in many forms God of old spake by the Father in the prophets, in the last days of these days He spake unto us in the Son," and so on. (Hebrews 1:1-2). The Twelfth Catechetical Instruction, on the words: Incarnate and Incarnate; also to the words of Isaiah: "And the Lord shall add unto Ahaz," saying, Ask thee a sign, and so on. (Isaiah 7:10).

Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, and so forth. (Isaiah 7:14). The Thirteenth Catechetical Homily, on the words: Crucified and buried; and also to the words of Isaiah: Lord! Who believes in our ears, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? and so on. As a sheep is led to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:1, 7). Fourteenth Catechetical Homily, on the words: And He rose from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven, and sat at the right hand of the Father; and to the words of the Apostles: "And I speak unto you, brethren, the gospel, which I have preached unto you, and so forth."

As he rose on the third day according to the Scriptures, etc. (1 Cor. 15:1; 15:4). The fifteenth catechetical sermon, on the words: And he who is coming to judge the living and the dead. And about the Antichrist. Also to the words of Daniel: "Behold, until the thrones were set up, and the Bremxii sat down in days," and so on. (Dan. 7:9). I saw in a dream the night, and behold, on the clouds of heaven, as the Son of Man was coming, and so on. (Dan. 7:13).

The sixteenth catechetical homily, on the words: And in one Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the prophets spoke, and also on the words from the Epistle to the Corinthians: As for the spiritual, O Lord, I do not want to be ignorant of you, and so on. (1 Corinthians 12:1.) And the division of gifts is the essence, and the same is the Spirit, and so on. (1 Corinthians 12:4). The seventeenth catechetical instruction, in which the continuation of the teaching about the Holy Spirit is proposed, and on the words from the first Epistle to the Corinthians: "To him the word of wisdom is given by the Spirit," and so on. (1 Corinthians 12:8).

Eighteenth Catechetical Homily, on the words: And in one, the Holy Catholic Church, I believe in the resurrection of the flesh and eternal life. Also in response to the words of Ezekiel: "And the hand of the Lord was upon me, and brought me forth in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me in the midst of the field: behold, it was full of human bones, and so forth." The first instruction on the mysteries, on the words from the First Epistle of Peter the Council, from this place: "Be sober, be watchful" (1 Pet. 5:8), even to the end of that epistle.

The second Mystical Instruction, on Baptism. To the words of the Apostle from the Epistle to the Romans, from this passage: "Do you not understand, that if we were baptized into Christ and into His death, we were baptized?" Up to this point: "For bear under the law, but under grace" (Romans 6:3, 14). Third Mystical Instruction, on Chrismation. On the words from the First Epistle of St. John, from this place: "Ye also have the anointing of God, and all things are known" (1 John 2:20)

until this place: and we shall not be ashamed of Him at His coming" (1 John 2:28). Fourth Mystical Instruction, on the Body and Blood of Christ. To the words of Paul's Epistle to the Corinthians: "And I have received from the Lord, and I have delivered it to you, and so on." (1 Corinthians 11:23). Fifth Mystical Teaching. From Peter's Conciliar Epistle: "By the same put aside all malice, and all flattery, and slander, and so on." (1 Pet. 2:11).
