Now it is customary to say "mental illness", but the root of the word somewhat obscures the meaning. Although most people know that "psyche" is translated as "soul", still, if you say "mental illness", "mentally ill", the situation becomes clearer.

When does a person get sick bodily? — In most cases, when his body is unable to cope with some infection, some harmful influences from the outside. The soul falls ill when it is unable to overcome the "viruses" of passions, and they get the better of it, take possession of it and sometimes even completely subjugate it (which is called possession).

The simplest example of the victory of passion over a person is the anger of a psychopath. After all, he knows perfectly well (not only at the age of 40, but also at the age of 4!) that shouting, threatening, fighting is bad. But he cannot cope with anger. In a state of affect, blinded by anger, he is capable of killing. Not like an enemy - a close, beloved person! Then, when the intensity of passions subsides, the psychopath will sincerely wonder how this happened to him. And sometimes he does not remember at all what he did half an hour ago.

And what is megalomania if not obsession with the passion of pride? So strong that it clouds your mind. After all, reasoning sensibly, it is impossible to consider yourself Napoleon or the President of the United States, if only because you live in a different time, in another country, and you have a different surname.

Yes, in their extreme manifestations, the mentally ill become unintelligent, devoid of intelligence. This state used to cause mystical horror in others, because the mind was considered one of God's main gifts to a person. "The Godhead is the mind and the word, "for in the beginning was the Word" (Jn. 1:1)," writes St. Gregory of Nyssa in his treatise "On the Structure of Man." "Human nature is not far from this. You see in yourself both the word and the mind, the likeness of the true Mind and the Word."

And here is what the pre-revolutionary priest John Kovalevsky says with reference to the Apostle Paul: "In the mind, God has placed an essential feature of His great image in us (Eph. 4:22-23), and for this reason, with the rejection of the mind, this grace-filled gift of heaven, man loses everything that constitutes his true greatness, his true dignity... Is it not most of the time, not to say always, that the reproach of stupidity is more offensive to a person than to reproach him with any other defect, even a moral one?" ("The Feat of Foolishness", Moscow, 2000, "Lepta".)

At the same time, the real mind is closely connected with faith in God. "We have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16). And on the contrary, it is not inexperience in the word, but lack of faith" ("Commentary on the 1st Epistle to the Corinthians", Moscow, 1882). The mind, enlightened by faith, leads a person along the narrow path of salvation, teaches him to curb the passions. The Apostle Paul commanded us not to be children in mind: in evil things we should be infants, but in mind we should be adults (1 Cor. 14:20). When the passions darken the mind, which the Holy Fathers called the light of the soul, a person, spiritually blind, becomes a slave of darkness. Thus, by breeding madness, anti-Christian forces are preparing an extensive support group for their future ruler. A group or an army?

How literalized today are the sayings of the Apostle Paul: "The wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God" (1 Cor. 3:19)! And in this crazy world, elementary Christian concepts can be considered crazy. Try to tell non-Orthodox people that the loss of innocence of a 17-year-old daughter is a misfortune immeasurably greater than the loss of money deposited in the bank. Or that my son's departure to a monastery is not a tragedy, but God's mercy. Acquaintances will begin to look at each other and grunt. And if we add that demons are not a metaphor at all, an awkward silence may reign. Someone will sigh sympathetically: they say, this is what going to church leads to. Completely, poor thing, she is crazy...

И смотрите, что на сей раз использует диавол, эта извечная обезьяна Бога, в качестве объекта пародии: Если кто из вас думает быть мудрым в веке сем, тот будь безумным, чтобы быть мудрым. (1 Кор. 3:18–19).

Формально этому наставлению следуют сейчас как никогда более старательно. Раньше, чтобы пробиться на ту же эстраду, все-таки нужно было иметь голос, хорошие внешние данные, умение красиво двигаться. Сейчас все это необязательно. Зато необходим «свой имидж» по принципу «чем эпатажнее, тем больше шансов на успех». Прикинься безумным — не прогадаешь. Причем из всех видов патологий предпочтительнее сексуальные. Вон группа «Тату», имидж которых — школьницы — лесбиянки. вообще-то это верх безумия — так популяризировать грубое половое извращение, да еще в детской среде. Но с точки зрения современных антрепренеров и обывателей они умны не по годам: такая слава, триумфальное шествие по всему миру, денег вагон. Можно сказать, с младых ногтей обеспечили себе достойную старость. Другие, дуры, часами пиликают на скрипке, разучивают гаммы, заканчивают консерватории, чтобы потом работать в заштатном оркестре, а то и музработником в детском саду. А эти, мудрейшие, раз — и в дамках!

И умение рисовать теперь ни к чему. Кому ты нужен со своими пейзажами, натюрмортами, портретами, не говоря уж о батальных сценах? А вот художник Кулик, посадивший себя голого на цепь и изобразивший собаку, пошел другим путем. Ему рукоплескал цивилизованный мир, он опять же заработал хорошие деньги… Каков мудрец!

Очень мудро прославил себя и писатель Сорокин, описав в своих романах копрофагию (поедание экскрементов) и антропофагию (поедание человеков). Его мудрость оценили по достоинству и на родине, и за ее пределами. На родине в некоторых школах даже включили его последний роман, нагруженный грязными ругательствами, в список рекомендованной литературы для внеклассного чтения. Мудрым слывет и политик, на которого иногда нелишне было бы надеть смирительную рубашку. И идеологи проекта «Русский ислам» — абсолютно безумной идеи исламизации России и русских. Их мудрость признана и поощрена властями, на реализацию проекта выделены значительные средства.

Как маячит за всей этой вакханалией «мудрого безумия» глумливая усмешка ее вдохновителя! Наверное, и он считает себя большим умником, поскольку так ловко извратил смысл апостольского изречения. Ведь апостол Павел, обращаясь к христианам города Коринфа, призывал их, естественно, не к беснованию, а к исповеданию Христа и к жизни по христианским заповедям. Жизни, которая «веку сему» может казаться безумием, но которая и есть настоящая мудрость. Безумными считались среди соплеменников те, кто отказывался бросить горстку благовоний на языческий жертвенник и с радостью претерпевал за это зверские муки. Но в конечном итоге они оказались мудрыми даже в «веке сем», ведь их слава пережила многие столетия, им молятся, их именами называют детей. Имена же их гонителей если и помнят, то только в связи с этими святыми мучениками.
