The Gospel of John

31. Pilate said to them, "Take him, and judge him according to your law." And the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;

32. that the word of Jesus may be fulfilled, which he spoke, giving us to understand by what death he would die.

33. Then Pilate went back into the praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

34. Jesus answered him, "Do you say this on your own behalf, or have others told you about me?"

35. Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew?" Thy people and chief priests have delivered thee unto me; what have you done?

36. Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight for Me, that I should not be delivered up to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.

37. Pilate said to him, "Are you therefore a King? Jesus answered, "You say that I am the King." For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth; whosoever is of the truth heareth my voice.

38. Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, I find no fault in him.

39. And it is your custom that I let you go alone at the Passover; Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?

40. Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not Him, but Barabbas." Barabbas was a robber.

Chapter 19

1. Then Pilate took Jesus and commanded him to be beaten.

2. And the soldiers, having wove a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in scarlet,

3. And they said, "Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him on the cheeks.
