Orthodox Catechism

Not all people are able to directly receive revelation from God because of their sinful impurity and weakness of spirit and body.

14. WHO WERE THE HERALDS OF GOD'S REVELATION?

The heralds of God's revelation were Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and other prophets. They received and preached the principles of God's revelation; and in fullness and perfection the revelation of God was brought to earth by the incarnate Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, and spread it throughout the world through His disciples and apostles.

The Apostle Paul says:

"God, who spoke many times and in many ways to the fathers in the prophets, in these last days spoke to us about the Son, whom He made heir of all things, through Whom He also created the worlds"

(Hebrews 1:1-2).

"But we preach the wisdom of God, which is secret, hidden, which God ordained before the ages for our glory; which none of the powers of this world has known... But God has revealed it to us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, and the depths of God"

(1 Cor. 2:7-8, 10)

The Evangelist John writes:

"No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has revealed"

(John 1:18).

Jesus Christ Himself says:

"No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son, and to whom the Son wants to reveal."

(Matt. 11:27).

15. CAN MAN KNOW GOD WITHOUT HIS SPECIAL REVELATION?

Man can know God by the method of examining the things created by Him, but this knowledge is imperfect and insufficient, and can only serve as a preparation for faith or only as a certain aid to the knowledge of God from His revelation.
