Chapter 40

And after these things the cupbearer of the king of Egypt, and the baker, did wrong to their lord king of Egypt.

And Pharaoh was angry with his two courtiers, with the chief cupbearer and with the chief baker,

And he gave them into custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in prison, in the place where Joseph was imprisoned.

And the captain of the guards assigned Joseph to them, and he ministered to them, and they remained in custody for some time.

And it came to pass that the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were imprisoned, had dreams, to each his own dream, both in the same night, to each a dream of special significance.

And Joseph came to them in the morning, and saw them, and behold, they were troubled.

And he asked Pharaoh's courtiers, who were with him in his master's house under guard, saying, 'Why do you have sad faces this day?'

And they said unto him, 'We have dreamed; and there is no one to interpret them. Joseph said to them, "Is not the interpretation of God?" Tell me.

And the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream, and said to him, "I dreamed, behold, the vine is before me;

There are three branches on the vine; it has developed, the color has appeared on it, the berries have grown and ripened on it;

And Pharaoh's cup is in my hand; I took the berries, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

And Joseph said to him, 'This is his interpretation: the three branches are three days;

In three days Pharaoh shall lift up thy head, and restore thee to thy place, and thou shalt give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, according to the former custom when thou wast his cupbearer.
