26Your Father's Blessings Surpass

the blessings of the mountains[407] of the ancients,

the bountiful gifts of the eternal hills;

let them be on the head of Joseph;

on the crown of his head, the husband, among his brethren – glorified.

27Benjamin is a gluttonous wolf,

In the morning he greedily swallows his prey,

and in the evening he seeks to snatch at least part of what has been stolen by others[408]."

28These are all the tribes of Israel, twelve in number; And this is what the Father said to them when he bade them farewell,409 giving each tribe his blessing.

The Death and Burial of Jacob

29And Jacob gave orders for his burial: "The time has come for me to go to my forefathers." Bury me beside my fathers, in the cave in the field of Efron the Hittite. 30This cave is in the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre in Canaan, in the field which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for burial. 31 There are buried Abraham and his wife Sarah, Isaac and his wife Rebekah, there I also buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave therein were bought into possession from the Hittites."

33When Jacob had finished his will to his sons, he laid his feet on the bed and died, and went to his forefathers.

50 Immediately Joseph rushed to his father, and covering his face with kisses, wept over him. 2He commanded the physicians from among his servants to begin embalming the body of Israel his father. And they immediately set to work, 3 completing the embalming in forty days, which was how long it took to do so.

The Egyptians mourned the deceased for seventy days. 4 When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's courtiers: "If you are pleased with me, please tell Pharaoh that when he was dying, my father took an oath from me that I would bury him in the tomb he had prepared for himself in the land of Canaan. Please let me go, that I may go and bury my father; and then I'll come back." 6"Go," said Pharaoh, "and bury your father—do what he asked you to assure him of."

7Joseph went out to bury his father, and with him went all the courtiers of Pharaoh, the noblest of his dignitaries, and all the elders of Egypt, 8as well as all Joseph's family, his brothers, and his father's household. In the land of Goshen, only small children and cattle remained. 9Joseph was accompanied by chariots and cavalry, and it was a great procession.

10When they came to Goren-ha-Ata[411] on the other side of the Jordan, they stopped there to pour out their sorrow in bitter cries; And Joseph spent seven days in weeping for his father. 11The Canaanites who lived there and witnessed the weeping at Goren ha-Atad said to one another: "See how bitterly the Egyptians mourn!"

12 Сыновья Иакова выполнили его предсмертную волю: 13перенесли его тело в Ханаан и похоронили в пещере на поле, что при Махпеле, на восток от Мамре, на том самом поле, которое Авраам в свое время купил у Эфрона–хетта для усыпальницы родовой. 14 Похоронив отца, Иосиф, его братья и все, кто ходил с ним предать усопшего земле, вернулись в Египет.

Иосиф и его братья

15Понимая, что уже нет в живых их отца, заступника их, братья Иосифа стали говорить между собой: «А что, если Иосиф питает недобрые чувства к нам и однажды захочет отплатить за всё то зло, что мы причинили ему?» 16Поэтому они послали Иосифу такую весть: «Твой отец перед смертью дал нам наказ: 17«Скажите Иосифу: я очень прошу тебя, прости преступление и грех братьев твоих, которые тебе такое зло причинили“. Так вот и мы теперь молим тебя: прости нам преступление наше, мы ведь тоже рабы Бога отца твоего». Услышав это, Иосиф заплакал. 18Затем пришли и сами братья, пали к ногам его и сказали: «Мы – рабы твои». 19«Не бойтесь! – отвечал им Иосиф. – Разве я вместо Бога могу что–нибудь делать? 20Да, вы замышляли сделать мне зло, но по замыслу Бога это благом великим обернулось, чтобы совершить ныне очевидное: спасти жизнь стольких людей! 21Не бойтесь, я буду заботиться о вас и детях ваших». И, говоря с ними от сердца к сердцу, он успокоил их.

22 Так и остался Иосиф в Египте, и он, и семья отца его. Он прожил сто десять лет. 23Довелось ему увидеть внуков Ефрема – своих правнуков. Видел он и детей Махира, сына Манассии, коих ввел он в число прямых наследников своих[413]. 24 Пришло время, и Иосиф сказал своим братьям: «Вот я умираю. Бог же непременно явит вам милость Свою[414] и выведет вас отсюда в ту землю, которую Он клятвенно обещал Аврааму, Исааку и Иакову». 25Иосиф взял с сынов Израилевых клятву, что, когда Бог явит им Свою милость, они унесут из Египта останки его.

26И умер Иосиф в Египте в возрасте ста десяти лет, тело его набальзамировали и положили в гроб.
