By water and blood and by the Spirit

unto you, Not as the world giveth I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, and let it not be timid. 28 You have heard that I said to you, 'I am going and will come to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I go to the Father, because the Father is greater than Me. 29 And now I told you before it came to pass, that when it came to pass, you would believe. 30 I will speak much more to you, for the prince of peace is coming, and in me he has nothing. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father has commanded me, I do so: arise, let us go hence.

1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch on me that does not bear fruit he removes, and every branch that bears fruit he cleanses, that it may bear greater fruit. 3 Ye are already pure through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I abide in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit of its own accord unless it abides on the vine, so can ye not bear fruit unless ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit, because without Me you can do nothing. 6 If any man abide not in me, he is cast out like a branch, and is withered. and they gather them together, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 In this is the glory of my Father, that you should bear much fruit, and become my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, and I have loved you: abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends, if you do what I command you. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you, and ordained you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatsoever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 This is what I command you, that you love one another. 18 If the world hates you, know that it hated me before you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. And because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word which I have spoken to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also; if they have kept my word, yours will also be kept. 21 But all these things will be done to you for my name's sake, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done works among them that no one else had done, they would have had no sin; but now they have seen and hated me and my Father. 25 But let the word written in their law be fulfilled: They hated me without a cause. 26 When the Comforter comes, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness to Me. 27 But ye also bear witness, for from the beginning ye have been with me.

16

1 This I have told you, that you may not be led into temptation. 2 They shall excommunicate you from the synagogues; but the hour is coming when anyone who kills you will think that he is serving God. 3 And this they will do, because they have not known the Father or Me. 4 But this I have told you, that you may remember when the hour comes, that I have told you about it. And I did not tell you this at first, because I was with you. 5 But now I go to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not depart, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will reveal to the world

his error about sin, and about righteousness, and about judgment: 9 about the sin that they do not believe in me; 10 But of righteousness, that I go to the Father, and see me no more; and of judgment, that the prince of this world is condemned. 12 Yet I have many things to tell you, but now you are not able. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will lead you into all truth, for he will not speak of himself, but will speak what he hears, and he will declare things to come to you. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take of mine, and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. Therefore I have said that He takes from Me and will declare it to you. 16 It is not long and you see me no more; and again for a short time, and you will see Me. 17 And some of the disciples said to one another, 'Why is it that he says to us, 'Not long yet, and you do not see me.' and again a little while, and you will see Me; and: Am I going to the Father? 18 And so they said, 'What is this, that He says, 'Not long?' We don't know what He says. 19 And when Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, he said to them, 'Do you reason with one another, because I said, 'Not long yet, and you do not see me.' and again a short time, and you will see Me? 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye shall weep and weep, but the world shall rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when he gives birth to a child, he no longer remembers the sorrow of joy that a man has been born into the world. 22 And now you have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you. E-23 And in that day you won't ask Me anything. Verily, verily, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything, he will give it to you in my name. 24 Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. 25 It is I who said to you in parables, 'The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in parables, but will declare the Father openly to you.' 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will pray to the Father for you. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I have come from God. 28 He went forth from the Father, and came into the world; again I leave the world and go to the Father. 29 His disciples say, 'Behold, now thou speakest openly, and speakest no parable.' 30 Now we know that Thou knowest all things, and have no need that any one should inquire of Thee. Therefore, we believe that You came from God. 31 Jesus answered them, 'Do you believe now?' 32 Behold, the hour is coming, and it has come that ye shall be scattered, every man unto himself, and ye shall leave me alone; but I am not alone, for the Father is with Me. 35 These things have I told you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.

1 And Jesus spake these things, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify Thee, 2 for Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life, 3 and eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Whom Thou hast sent: Jesus Christ. 4 I have glorified thee on earth, having done the work which thou hast given me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me with Thee, with the glory which I had before the world was, with Thee. 6 I have manifested your name to the people whom you have given me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they kept your word. 7 Now they knew that all that Thou hast given Me is of Thee, 8 for the words which Thou hast given Me I have given unto them, and they have received and known verily that I have come from Thee, and have believed that Thou hast sent Me. 9 I pray for them, not for peace, but for those whom you have given me, because they are yours; 10 And all that is mine is yours, and yours is mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in Thy name, which Thou hast given Me, that they may be one as We are. 12 And when I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me, and hast preserved, and not one of them perished, save the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come unto thee, and I speak these things in peace, that my joy may be full in them. 14 I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, neither am I of the world. 15 I do not pray that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world. 17

Sanctify them with truth: Thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, and I have sent them into the world; 19 and for them I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in the truth. 20 And I pray not only for them, but also for them that believe in me according to their word, 21 that all may be one, even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 And the glory which thou hast bestowed upon me, I have bestowed upon them, that they may be one, even as we are one. 23 I am in them, and you in me, that they may be perfect as one, that the world may know that you have sent me, and have loved them as you have loved me. 24 Father! That which Thou hast bestowed upon Me, I desire that where I am, they also should be with Me, that they may see My glory, which Thou hast bestowed upon Me, because Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, the world did not know you, but I knew you, and they knew that you sent me. 26 And I have told them thy name, and I will tell them, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

1 When Jesus had said this, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the brook of Kidron, where there was a garden into which he himself and his disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed him, knew this place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having taken a cohort,118 and from the chief priests and Pharisees, the ministers, comes thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 And Jesus, knowing all that was before him, went out, and said unto them, Whom are ye seeking? 5 And they answered him, 'Jesus of Nazareth.' Jesus said to them, "I am[119] And Judas, who had betrayed Him, stood with them. 6 So when He said to them, "I am," they turned back and fell to the ground. 7 Then he asked them again, 'Whom are you seeking?' They said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am." Therefore, if you seek Me, leave these, let them go. 9 Let the word be fulfilled which he said, Of those whom thou hast given me, I have destroyed none. 10 And Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus. 11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword into the sheath.' The cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it? 12 So the cohort and the tribunes,120 and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him, 13 and brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest for that year. 14 And Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was better for one man to die for the people. 15 Following Jesus was Simon Peter and another disciple. And the disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the court of the high priest; E-16 And Peter was standing at the door outside. Then the disciple came out, another known to the high priest, and spoke to the gatekeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 Then said to Peter the maidservant-doorkeeper, 'Are you not one of the disciples of this man?' He said: no. 18 And the servants and the servants stood, and they kindled the coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them Peter stood and warmed himself. 19 And the high priest inquired of Jesus concerning his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, "I have told the world all things openly; I have always taught in the synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard what I have said to them, for they know what I have said. 22 And when he had said this, one of the ministers standing near by, smote Jesus in the face, and said, "Is this how you answer the high priest?" 23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken badly, bear witness to what is wrong." If it is good, why do you beat Me? 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 And Simon Peter still stood and warmed himself. And they said unto him, Are thou not one of his disciples? He denied and said, "No." 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, 'Did I not see you in the garden with him?' 27 Then Peter denied again, and straightway the crowed. 28 So they lead Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning, and they themselves did not enter the praetorium, so as not to be defiled, but to eat the Passover. 29 Pilate went out to them and said, 'What accusation do you bring against this man?' 30 And they answered and said to him, 'If he had done no evil, we would not have delivered him up to you.' 31 Then Pilate said to them, 'Take him, and judge him according to your law.' The Jews said to him, "We are not permitted to execute

nobody; 32 May the word of Jesus be fulfilled, which he spoke, to make it clear by what death he was to die. 33 Then Pilate went back into the praetorium and called Jesus and said to him, 'Are you the King of the Jews?' 34 Jesus answered, "Do you say these things of yourself, or have others told you about me?" 35 And Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew?' Thy people and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world." If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight that I should not be delivered up to the Jews. Now My kingdom is not from here. 37 Then Pilate said to him, "Then you are still a King?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am the King." For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. 38 Pilate said to him, 'What is truth?' And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, I find no fault in him. 39 And it is your custom that I should let you go alone at the Passover. Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you? 40 Then they cried out again, saying, 'Not this one, but Barabbas.' And Barabbas was a robber.

19

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers, having wove a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple garment, 3 and came up to him, and said, 'Long live the King of the Jews!' And they struck Him in the face. 4 And Pilate went out again, and said to them, 'Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him.' 5 Then Jesus went out wearing a crown of thorns and a purple garment. And Pilate said to them, Behold, a man. 6 And when the chief priests and the ministers saw him, they cried out, 'Crucify, crucify.' Pilate said to them, "Take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him." 7 And the Jews answered him, "We have the law, and according to the law he must die, because he made himself the Son of God." 8 And when Pilate heard this word, he was the more terrified, 9 and he went into the praetorium again, and said to Jesus, 'Where are you from?' Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 Then Pilate said to him, 'Do you not speak to me?' Do you not know that I have the power to let you go, and I have the power to crucify you? And Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over me, unless it were given to you from above." Therefore, he who has delivered Me to you has a greater sin. 12 From that time on, Pilate sought to let him go. But the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this go, you are no friend of Caesar." Everyone who makes himself king rebels against Caesar. 13 When Pilate heard these words, he led Jesus outside and sat down to execute judgment in a place called the Stone Platform, or in Hebrew Gabbatha. E-14 And it was the Friday before the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King." 15 Then they cried out, 'Down, down, crucify him!' Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." 16 Then he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. 17 And bearing the cross, he went out to a place called the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha, 18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side of him, in the middle of Jesus. 19 And Pilate made an inscription on the board, and set it on the cross. And it was written, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. 20 This inscription on the board was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Roman, in Greek. 21 And the chief priests of the Jews said unto Pilate, Thou shalt not write, King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews. 22 And Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.' 23 And the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and divided them into four parts, to each soldier a part, and a tunic. The tunic was not sewn, it was woven entirely from the very top. 24 And they said to one another, 'Let us not tear him up, but let us cast lots for him, whose it will be.' Let the Scripture be fulfilled:
