"Give rest, O God, to Thy servant (servant, servants) and give him (her, them) a place in paradise, where all the saints, O Lord, and the righteous shine like lights. Thus, every inhabitant of the earth shines in vain, as the Holy Scriptures also say. But, O Christ God, give rest to him who has already migrated, as the Lover of mankind." There we mortals will go, with sepulchral sobs, crying the song: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah."

Stichera (self-voiced) of St. John of Damascus.

Voice ²: "What worldly joy is not mixed with sorrow? What glory stands unshaken on earth? Everything is more insignificant than a shadow, more deceptive than dreams: one moment and death takes everything away. But, O Christ, as the Lover of mankind, give rest to Thy chosen one in the light of Thy face and in the enjoyment of Thy beauty." Hl. 2: "Oh, how the soul suffers when it is separated from the body! Oh, how many tears she sheds at this time, and there is no one to feel sorry for her! She turns to the Angels and prays to them in vain; stretches out his hands to people and there is no one to help. Therefore, my beloved brethren, having understood the brevity of our life, let us ask Christ for the repose of him who has migrated from us, and for our souls great mercy." Hl. 3. "Everything human that does not remain after death is nothing; wealth does not remain with a person, glory does not accompany him. As soon as death comes, all this is gone. Therefore, let us exclaim to the Immortal Christ: give rest to him who has migrated from us where the dwelling place is for all who rejoice." Chapter 4. "Where is the attachment to the world? Where are the dreams of transient blessings? Where is the gold and silver? Where are the many noisy servants? Everything is dust, everything is ashes, everything is a ghost. Come, let us exclaim to the immortal King: O Lord, vouchsafe him who has migrated from us Thy eternal blessings, giving him rest in Thy unfading bliss." Hl. 5 "I remembered the prophet who cried out, 'I am earth and ashes!'" And then I looked into the graves, saw the bare bones, and said to myself: "Who is the ruler here? Who is a simple warrior? Who is rich or poor, righteous or sinner? But give rest, O Lord, with the righteous to Thy servant." Hl. 6: "The beginning of my being was Thy creative command, for, desiring to make me alive from the invisible principle and visible nature, Thou didst create my body from the earth, and gave me my soul, breathing it in Thy divine and life-giving breath. Therefore, O Christ, give rest to Thy servant in the land of the living, in the dwelling place of the righteous." Hl. 7. "Having first created man in Thy image and likeness, Thou didst dwell him in Paradise, that he might possess Thy creatures. But deceived by the envy of the devil, he ate the forbidden fruit, becoming transgressors of Thy commandments. For this reason, O Lord, Thou hast condemned him to return to the earth and ask Thee for repose." Hl. 8: "I weep and weep every time I think of death and see our beauty lying in the grave, created in the image of God, ugly, inglorious, without any form. Oh, a miracle! What is this mysterious phenomenon with us? How did we give ourselves over to decay? How did you connect with death? Truly this, as it is said in the Scriptures, is by the command of God, who gives rest to him who has departed from us."
