Text of the Festal Menaion in Russian

Verse: Thy face will be implored / by the rich of the people. Ps 44:13b

Put aside, Adam and Eve, / all sorrow, / for the Mother of Joy from barren / gloriously grows on this day.

Glory, and now, the voice and likeness are the same

The temple of God / is the only Mother of God / from the barren and not childbearing, / and Adam rejoices, exclaiming.

Troparion, Tone 4

Sergius of Svyatogradets

On this day, God, resting on rational thrones, / on earth has prepared a holy throne for Himself; / Who established the heavens with wisdom / Built the Heaven Animate according to love for mankind; / for from a barren root He has brought forth for us / a life-giving plantation – His Mother. / Thou art the God of miracles and the hope of the hopeless, / O Lord, glory to Thee!

This is the day of the Lord, rejoice, people; / for the Bridal Chamber of Light / and the Book of the Word of Life came forth from the womb; / and the Born – the door facing east, / awaits the entrance of the great Priest – / the only one, and leads into the universe of the one Christ / unto the salvation of our souls.

If, by the Divine will, / famous barren women gave birth to children, / but Mary shone more divinely than all those born; / for she, having herself miraculously born of a childless mother, / gave birth to all in the flesh of God / above nature from a seedless womb – / the only Door of the only-begotten Son of God; / having passed through it, He preserved Her shut up / and, having arranged everything wisely, as He Himself knows, / He brought about salvation for all people. (2)

Stephen of Svyatogradets

On this day the barren gates are opened, / and the virgin Divine Door comes out; / on this day grace begins to bear the first fruits, / revealing to the world the Mother of God, / through Whom the earthly and the heavenly are united / for the salvation of our souls. (2)

This day is the entrance of universal joy, / on this day the winds blew, the harbingers of salvation; / the barrenness of our nature ceases, / for the barren one turns out to be the mother / of the One Who is a virgin even after the birth of the Creator, / from Whom God by nature appropriates that which is alien to Himself / and through the flesh brings salvation to the deceived: / Christ is the lover of mankind and the Redeemer of our souls.

On this day, the barren Anna gives birth to the Virgin of God, / pre-chosen from all generations / to the abode of the King of all and Creator, Christ God, / for the fulfillment of the Divine plan, / by which we, born on earth, are recreated / and renewed from corruption / to unceasing life.

Glory, and now: In this day God rests on reasonable thrones:

1. Genesis Reading

Jacob went away from the Well of the Oath, and went to Haran, and came to a certain place, and lay down there to sleep, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place, and put it under his head, and fell asleep in that place. And he saw in a dream: and behold, the ladder is established on the earth, and its top reaches to heaven; and the angels of God ascended and descended upon it. And the Lord stood upon it, and He said, "I am the God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; Don't be afraid. The land on which thou sleepest, I will give it to thee, and to thy seed; and thy seed shall be like the sand of the earth; and it will spread to the sea, and to the south, and to the north, and to the east; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed; and behold, I am with thee, keeping thee in every way whither thou goest; and I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have told you." And Jacob awoke from his sleep and said: "The Lord is present in this place; and I did not know!" And he was afraid, and said: "How terrible is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gates of heaven!"
